Try not to make much more so that Obama doesn't steal all your money.

Summer Associates at big firms get paid the same as first year associates. It doesn't matter what law school you went to. Houston big firms are paying their first year associates up to around 160K a year. My number might be a little off, but 2-3K a week is not unusual for a big firm summer job.

Or perhaps a cleverly disguised "I've got a friend or family member graduating from UVA law school" thread.

ooohhh, okay, I guess I'm not smart enough for the law school either. seriously though, there are probably very few people who could answer this.

I don't think that sounds unreasonable. I am in law school at a middle of the road school and hear about people getting paid pretty well for their summer jobs, however I am not one of them. I do have a buddy that just graduated from Harvard Law and had a job in San Diego that paid something like $5k/week this past summer. UVA isn't quite on Harvard's level, but is still a top law school.

So, to answer your question, that sounds about right for Houston.

That's pretty good in my book...Do all lawyers have the same pay scale? Meaning, does it matter what field your concentrating in? I would imagine, but I'm no lawyer...

No, a lot of it depends on the geographical area you practice in addition to the type of law your practice concentrates on. For example, very few people focus on criminal law because it is generally very hard to make a good living as a lawyer for criminal defendants unless you are at the very top of that field. Also, immigration law is another one that pays very poorly in general (most of your clients don't have money).

Also, probably more than any other field, your pay depends on your grades in law school and where you graduated from.

I don't think so. My brother-in-law's father was the city attorney for the town I live in (southern middle TN) and I don't think he ever made 6 figures (but the cost of living here is a helluva lot cheaper than someplace like Atlanta or even Houston). It probably depends on what branch of law you go into.

Sounds about right to me. Summer Associates at the big name law firms like Fulbright and Jaworski, V&E, and Baker Botts are very well compensated since getting the internships are pretty competitive.

To put things in perspective, consulting internships for MBAs at places like Deloitte, BCG, and Bain are typically $10k/mo, or $2500/wk. So, I think you're UVA buddy is doing alright.
