Going to be heading in-state to the beach this summer...

Just wondering, though we are staying much farther inland than the beach itself...

Is there anything really family friendly to do around South Padre, or is it all party-ville?

Never been... well not with family... Last time I was there was actually on a fishing trip or a run to the McAllen area for some church related stuff, like missions work... Never gone there to actually go to the beach though.

We'll be staying in the Harlingen area on sort of a business trip working vacation... but there must be more than just Sonic and fast food nearby.

Is there a family beach area?

Just wondering if the hangout crew knows.

Okay... but you're right I'd prefer the New Braunfels one.

And then there's the "and cheap" part I left out...

    Thanks though... ;)

    Any other suggestions?

Not really. It's been way too long since I've been to Padre, and we've always left the kids with someone. Good luck!

Thanks... we may check out the two day ticket option though... we are going back in July as well, and the ticket can be used for the second day at any point in the same season.

I just browsed the site, and they do have some kid friendly areas.

Boobies. Dad loves em. Babies love em.

But no. There's nothing to do in South Padre for families. I say that authoritatively as a member of a family.

Port Aransas was a good family time. Probably not even as far, I remember?

I went to South Padre maybe 10 years ago, when I was an early teenager. Anyways, there was this 4 x 4 ATV race track you could race around a dirt track with. At that time it was very cool. It probably still would be today.

I think I remember para gliding was also available at the time.

For cheaper options, just buy a kite. Its great fun and I don't see kids flying kites these days.

Kite flying is actually a good idea. There should be plenty of wind at the beach (maybe too much!), kites are so cheap you could get one for everybody, and the setting should be terrific.

Back when my parents were poor, we went to South Padre.

Now we go to our house in Nantucket generally for vacations.

Just got back from there. Not sure what you mean by "family beach area". There's beach everywhere - are you expecting it to look like spring break? There's nothing but families there outside of spring break.

Also the zoo is a good idea. We went there and liked it a lot (we go to a lot of zoos). Lots of shade, and there's a badass gorilla exhibit. Most zoos don't even have gorillas it seems.

Edit: just re-read your post. I assure you it's nothing like spring break at all. Very low-key, not crowded, all families.

Just take advantage of the beach. That's by far the best family thing to do this time of year, and cheap too, other than the gas now.

swimming, tanning, frisbee, collecting seashells, castles, barbeque, fishing ... lots of family stuff to do.

You can park and walk to the beach. Or pay a small fee(3 bucks or so) and drive onto a section of the beach where the sand has been pushed down so any car can drive on it. Or, if you have 4 wheel drive, you can just drive onto the beach from an entrance and drive to as far away of an isolated spot as you want. You can even camp out there if you want, but I wouldn't reccomend it, as there can be some real weirdos out there.

As far as the zoo, it is a really cool zoo. But right now it is freaking hot. Hotter than houston. Keep that in mind.

Well this is a place I'm very familiar with. I just Father's day weekend at the Bahia Mar condo. SPI is only partyville during spring break, the rest of the time it is real melo. There are plenty of gift shop's, you can rent some jet ski's, take a bannana boat ride etc. There is plenty to do. If you head on out to Isla Blanca park you pay $4 park on parking lot. They have showers to rinse off, snack stand, and bbq pits. You go fishing at the jetti's. Plenty of things to do. I live 30 min away and visit very often.

The beach. The water. The restaurants.

When I see these threads I get the feeling they are cleverly disguised "Hey, look where I am going!" threads.

I'm going to post a thread like this- "What to do in Vegas? Anything interesting to do there? I heard there might be gambling?"
