I'm a big ol' racist I'm pretty sure it's because I took longer to finish the black/good then the white/good test, and suspect its because of the order. If not...I blame TV. (hopefully, the test mixes up the order -- so some of y'all got the "whitey=good" first -- otherwise that's a pretty big weakness in the test). I have my doubts as to how meaningful this thing might be.
I did this test after reading the book Blink. Which is the worst book ever by the way. But I naturally preferred white people over black, and McCain over Clinton or Obama. According to the book, the test doesn't determine if you are racist or not, but assesses your unnoticed ethnic values you have placed. For example, white and good go together, as do black and criminal. Even black people who took this test had difficulty getting rid of the black and criminal link. But yea, I really don't like these tests.
I came up with "Slight preference for European Americans" although my personal belief is that Everybody is Racist in some capacity, whether they know it or not. Some more than others. The problems occur when people embrace racism or just deny its existence. This happens in Every Race. Everyone should look into their own heart and find where racism may lie and try to change themselves.
Having internal biases and prejudice doesn't make your racist in my opinion. Everyone does, and it's human to be that way. What makes you racist is when those internals biases and prejudices result in actions that cause harm to others. That's racism. You can have a negative reaction to anyone for any reason, but does it translate into attitudes or behaviors? That's the question. It's one thing to be intrinsically biased, it's another to be consciously biased. This I think this test is very eye-opening for a lot of people.
I have a slight preference for African Americans and a String preference for Asian Americans. Not that surprising...
This is the second time I've taken the test. Last time I had a slight preference for black opposed to white. This time there was no automatic preference.
Your data suggest little to no automatic preference between European American and African American and Drunken Monkey Punches.
Your data suggest little to no automatic preference between European American and African American. That was repetitive and gave me a headache.
I would assume they checked that sort of thing with controlled tests. What you're talking about would be really easy to look into.
This is from their FAQs: Could the result be a function of the order in which I did the two parts? I had to group one category together with pleasant words first. I then found it difficult when I later had to group the other category with pleasant words. Answer: The order in which tests are administered does make a difference to the overall result in some tests. However, the difference is small and recent changes to the test have sharply reduced the influence of order. Because of this order effect, the orders used for IATs presented on this website are assigned at random. For any data we present, we are careful to be sure that half the test-takers got the A then B order and the other half got the B then A order. With the revised task design, the order has only a minimal influence on task performance. If you want to check whether the order made a difference for you, you can take the test again and complete it if you get assigned to the reverse order. If you do take the test twice in different orders and get different outcomes, the best estimate of your result is intermediate between the two. For more information about the order effect, see this paper (Nosek, Greenwald, & Banaji, in press).
Weird. I went home, and tried the same test, and I got this: "You like big butts and you cannot lie. Them other brothers can't deny, that when when a girl walks in with a little bitty waist and a round thing in your face, you get sprung."
