my excuse is that i'm a php script writer, and use variables like $thisWdgt or this_widget() . php code hardly requires capitals except for GLOBALS.

Eh, it's the Internet and you have kids here posting (some not even older than 16). So, if someone doesn't have the greatest grammar in the world - and Lord knows that my grammar can be below snuff at times, I don't sweat it. I think a lot of it has to do with the way people talk. When you are posting on a forum like this, the tendency is to do it in a casual way like the way you speak. Now, if people were being "graded" on how their posts read, then this problem probably wouldn't be as bad.

The lack of capitalization used to bother me but then you have posters like MadMax and my old OOTP buddy, DVauthrin who rarely capitalize anything. So, that was something I learned to let go of pretty quickly around here. My biggest pet peeves are as follows:

    1) misusing the word "loose" - when you don't win something, you don't "loose" it - you "lose" it. It absolutely amazes me that so many people confuse "loose" with "lose".

    2) not using paragraphs (especially if the post is going to be more than 8 to 10 lines) - talk about making a post unreadable.

I definitely agree that berating someone's education level is quite rude. At the same time, I doubt many people here over the age of 18 who speak English natively weren't educated in the language at some point in grammar school. Hayesfan is probably working under that assumption - that most folks on this website are fairly well educated, and immune to insult on that level.

When it comes to lack of care, my opinion is that if they don't worry about their posts' appearance, they shouldn't take insult.

Altogether, I'm with you and Hayesfan on this one. It annoys me to the point where I'd like to rant on the topic, but I wouldn't have made this thread myself out of fear of disrespecting some.

    I could have been pickier.

It's a message board - not an essay, report, or email. There's no need to use perfect grammar, spelling, or caps. Conversations are meant to be conversational...and that is all that's happening here.

In your original post you stated that it must be difficult for foreigners to learn English when they see us write the way I do. Personally, I never write to "teach" somebody a language. If they want to learn, they'll attend a language school and actually talk to people. Message boards are a language of their own.

Sure - some things might annoy me from time to time, but this message board is A LOT better than 99% of them.

(other people having dumb pet peeves is my pet peeve)

What's better HayesFan: Got Milk or Do you have Milk? How about Rock has no reason rock has no rhyme or Rock got no reason, rock got no rhyme. How about this, haynesfan, what's the difference between prescriptive grammar and descriptive, and do you care to know? When you look these words up, because I know you have no idea what they are, come back and read the next few sentences. You know what the difference between a linguist and a school marm is? One has the great good sense that they don't know everything and the other lives by antiquated rules.

there is no correct way to use the phrase "youre" unless you are giving an example of how not to spell "your" or "you're"

"youre" with no apostrophe is not a word

Another pet peeve: conflating 'dominant' and 'dominate'

ie. Yao needs to be more dominate.

Or how about when users mix up affect and effect. It is a common mistake, but for some reason this one always jumps out at me.

My conclusion is that the way you type/speak is a reflection of your intelligence whether or not you like. There are right ways to express sentiments, and there are wrong ways. Feel free to be wrong, just don't be defensive, or surprised that you are coming off as lazy/illiterate. It's annoying to those who know how to speak but certainly not the end of the world. If you want people to read what you have to say, and ideally engage in intelligent conversation about what you have said, then make it readable.

Having said that, people who spend their time responding to typos or other incorrect word usages with grammar policing 'FIXED!' posts and get agitated over someone's literacy who they don't know (and will likely never meet) are probably more annoying than the illiterate rookie who can't spell 'cluth'. This isn't intended for Hayesfan for starting this rant thread. In fact, Hayesfan might be the best damn poster on this board.

Its not so much that I find the lack of perfect grammar irritating. I just want to be able to read the damn thing, and preferably without any nonsense slang that someone might use in a text message. "LOL," "gonna", or "dunno" for example is fine whereas "ne1" instead of "anyone" is just plain stupid.

What irritates me more is that some people seem to completely disregard any sensible coherence when they type out their thoughts. The result often comes across as completely unintelligible. This either makes the poster look as though 1) they don't care enough about what they have to say to make it readable, 2) they don't care enough about others to make their posts readable, or 3) they're, like, 2nd graders or something.

There are a few posters here who I recognize and respect enough, but whose posts I often ignore entirely because it takes more effort than it should to read them. If someone can't be bothered to TRY to type coherently, I ain't gonna bother to read what they have to say.

Touché, across110thstreet, but I really meant to say "youre" is not a word. Good catch, sir.

It's also "it's", not "its", unless you're using it as a possessive. ;)
