I agree and disagree with the frustration....

    (1) After typing a bazillion posts online over many years, hitting the shift key is just an unnecessary nuisance. I can see how it is important in a professional or more formal setting; however, for posts, it's simply not necessary. By omitting the shift key from my typing, I am able to type more fluidly.

    (2) Sometimes, using slang is a better choice to deliver sentiment. For example, you could say "that's simply unacceptable" or you could say, "that just ain't gonna fly". They both have the same meaning, but context is delivered more clearly in the second one.

    (3) Grammatical accidents are a different animal, and I, too, find them annoying. Such statements as "we got not cap room" and "i seen it the other day"... These are the actions not of someone who is intentionally attempting to abbreviate their syntax, or deliver a specific context, but of someone who just doesn't speak their language well. That's terrible.

This coming from a "male" who is unable to post without using half the emoticons available on the internet.

^^^ If you can find the post that started it all, you win a cookie. :D
Why am I not surprised you'd bring THAT up?

They're on the right side every time you post. So if I use them, it's wrong? I don't just use them to annoy you—although now I will, since you enjoy it so much—but to help the reader determine my emotion... a :p instead of a  will let you know I am joking around... not being so serious. ;)

As a person whose mother tongue isn't English, I can say that I struggle with punctuation. Vocabulary, expressions and idioms are easy to learn on the internet or from TV shows and video games. That's not the case with punctuation. What's worse, none of my English teachers ever bothered to correct the mistakes on our essays. So when using commas, I go by the rules of my own language and can only imagine how many mistakes I make.

With that said, I wonder if people even glance over their posts before hitting 'submit'. Whenever I see a red line somewhere, I check if I haven't made a mistake.

Strangely enough, the sample you singled out is still better than half the posts out there.

some of grammar mistakes annoy me but then again we arent exactly writting dissertations here nor is this an english class. sometimes i capitalize, sometimes i insert the " ' " sometimes i don't...it's whatever happens.

plus, if someone is like me, i don't really waste the time to go back and proofread. Just go with it

Ah...............but wouldn't having the Title give your posts more Strength - Value in the eyes of some members? That you have been selected by the BBS Powers as somebody who carries the proper attitude and approach for posting on this Message Board.

    Lazy. :p
I was referring to your comment, not your specific post. I did not call YOU specifically a dumbass, sir.

eMat, surprisingly enough, you'd be amazed at how much non-native English speakers can write and speak English better than those born and raised in the U.S. of A. or England.

Meh...Posting on forums is a form of free flowing communication. I would bet that most people write the same way they speak.

One thing that bugs me though- when people spell no one like this: noone

It is annoying, but this board is The Chicago Manual of Style compared to others.

I tend to type here as I talk... with ... representing a pause in conversation. Beyond that, I try to adhere to the basics.

It IS irritating, of course. Not because I think "****, all these people are inbred morons who don't understand grammar or syntax. I can't be seen associating with such low-lifes!" More because I CAN'T READ WHAT THE HELL YOU ARE TRYING TO EXPRESS. To all those who use shorthand or don't get the English language, we don't want to be the grammar police, we simply want to understand what you are trying to say without having to read it several times and fill in your gaps.

For me, I mostly give the layman poster the benefit of the doubt, because of the prevalent language barrier. I'm glad they're trying, and their English will most likely improve by continuing to post, read, and have interactive conversations, without being bombarded by and likely intimidated by Americans who won't tolerate their novice writing skills. It's obvious when someone is conveying errors in translation versus straight up ignorance/laziness.

Personally though, it is far more annoying to me when:
    a) When the youngsters use abbreviations for already brief words like 'u', 'da', 'sum', 'wut' etc.
    b) Emoticons are overused, and overused and overused. Obviously, this refers to Swoly, and others as well. I like the substance of your posts generally, but they hurt my eyes. JMHO, but if you toned down the face-crazy expression, I think people would still get your point and your posts would read much smoother.
    c) sook quotes himself for quote of the year.

Take it easy. If this were a college course, everyone would watch their grammar. But its not, its only a message board on the internet. The one place where people can let loose and not have to worry about being politically correct, perfect grammar and spelling or whether or not you are hurting feelings.

Seriously, if you understand what they are trying to say, with grammar mistakes and all, why be a dick about it? There's one thing if the grammar errors make it impossible to understand but most of the time its misspelled words or incorrect punctuation. Its not even a big deal. I think people just like b****ing for the sake of being a b****.

Whats next? I guess we should get rid of "internet slang" in favor of perfect grammar. Does using LOL or OMG make you a r****d? Are you stupid if you abbreviations like SF3 or NBA? I would love to see words like "pwned" and "failed" banished from all message boards. Does  consist of good grammar?
