As some of you may know, im trying to build a laptop computer. Ive looked at pricewatch.com to find motherboards for laptops, thinking that I can buy an AMD Athlon really cheap (125.00) and build it from there. My question is, are laptop motherboards different from desktop ones? I need help!!

Build a laptop  are you serious ?

You can probably buy one cheaper than you can build it.

It is going to be damn near impossible to build a laptop. Fork over the money and buy one.

How much does a good laptop motherboard cost? Whee do i go to get one? I figured that since I can buy a stripped laptop on ebay for about 40.00, i would replace the motherboard and buy a cd-rom for around 80.00 i think for laptops. Most stripped ones on ebay come with a floppy, and if i needed a CD-RW they run around 130.00. I had the idea that I could build a good one for around 500.00

Because all of that crap is built specifically for those boxes. It will not work. Period.

Most laptop components are custom built for the case so this wouldn't work. Plus the AMD Athlon you are thinking of buying is probably for a desktop and wouldnt fit on a laptop board and if it did it would eat up more better then a laptop CPU would

Processors are usually soldered onto the board so dont hold your breath.

Don't even try . . . it's theoretically possible (anything is), but your chances of succeeding are about 1 in 1000. The thing is that almost all laptop motherboards are proprietary, and the connectors are nonstandard.

If you were really adventurous, you could buy all the laptop parts and then build your own case.

The thing is though, laptop processors are not the same as regular processors. You'd go with a "mobile" athlon, rather than a regular one, unless you want 0 battery power.

Okay, let's here from the future Dell design engineer. :)

Laptop boards are often 10-12 layer printed circuit boards. Desktop motherboards are usually 6-layer PCBs. Some companies such as Sony (Vaio) have 2 sided boards, with the memory on the bottom side.

Laptop boards are manufactured by a company called Quanta in Taiwan. They are legacy-free, and their drives are not compatible with your standard desktop peripherals, unless you go external.

This is a very adventurous project. Good luck, young Jedi.

Jeez, I've tried to stay out but I'm seeing you need help.

Don't do it. It's a waste of time. For one thing, that mobo that supports a 166 MHz processor probably won't support anything much faster. You'll be spending about $200-$500 on junk.

    Buy a Mac instead :)

On eBay, 3 year old Powerbooks are running ~$400. A better buy, and it will run "contemporary" software much longer than its PC equivalent.

If you're really in need, finance it. You'd end up paying a lot mroe than you should, but you might be able to get a computer of your choice, and assuming you have some kind of income now (from student or part-time job), your chosen profession later - lawyer - should make up for the expense. Just a thought though.
