You are assuming that there was a "hidden agenda", yet there is nothing in the article saying that (and your recent argument was that we don't know what went on, we just have an article in a newspaper). You wrote "hidden agenda" in at least one of your posts. You responded to MadMax indicating there was an "agenda". The whole slide show seemed to be a lesson in what Muslim's believe.

It is hard to be informed prior to an IMPROMPTU assembly. Afterwards, I would have expected my children to let me know about their school day. If they participated in something I had questions about, I would have contacted the school to get more information. Over my K-12 grade years, we had many assemblies our parents were never notified about in advance.

Simply saying "They are the fastest growing religion in the world" implies acceptance by the world of their religion.

When in reality a lot of those converts are forced into it by an overbearing leadership or populace......in Africa, and in Iran and around the world......

And as impressionable kids are prone to be followers, this could be read as a soft recruitment tool.

Sorry, but I don't want religious leaders coming into schools and recruiting my kids.

And THANK GOD....the US constitution protects everyone and has a seperation of church and state........

Religion has no business being in schools......outside of history and politics and sociology.

So even though you weren't privy to the presentation, you are assuming that the presenters were attempting to "recruit" some of these students into their religion based on (in your words) "just an article in the newspaper"?

The parents should have been PRIVVY to the presentation before it was made, it should have been discussed.

I read the presentation, and think it could be a soft recruitment tool, yes.

The parents should have been informed, that is my biggest issue...the no religion in school is a secondary issue.

And the school leadership must somewhat agree with me, the principal was fired........

Dada, you seem to be an intelligent person, but wisdom and humility is in short supply. This thread does not present you in a very favorable light.

The sentiments and vitriol you have spewed in this thread, and apparently shared by students in the school, are the very reason your school needed the presentation. Duh.

I'm glad our children do not share a school.

    Rashmon,

First off, my kids did not go to this school, I am just commenting on the issue overall.

I have views on religion that are offensive to some, I don't think religion is anything more than mythos - no different than Santa Claus or the tooth fairy.

I do believe religions were started by real people, who led amazing lives, Jesus and Muhammed etc, but IMO they are simply great men, nothing more.

Is that offensive? I guess so, but it is no more offensive than someone quoting from the Bible, Koran or Torah as the word of God is to me. Beause to me those are books written by man to explain the unexplainable.

People choose to ignore facts in matters of faith, I get that. No one wants to be told their religion of choice is full of hypocrisy, politics, mythos, and other nasty bits.

I think you would find my kids very enlightened about religion and life in general, they will make up their own mind one day, and if they choose to follow a path of faith, then I will be happy for their choice.

However, if they ask my thoughts, I will be happy to explain how things like Pork got to be labled as unclean, or how many Babylonian, Egyptian and Summarian legends/stories got put into the current religious texts.

Or, how there is hypocrisy in all religious books, where turn the other cheek is contradicted by an eye for an eye, to name an easy example.

I don't claim to know the truth, I am still searching, but I am not going to ignore the facts while I search....I put my faith in science and history.

Bad example. Fully read/research/understand the passages you cite and you will see it is not hypocrisy.

Hypocrisy abounds in the recognized religious texts. My example may not be perfect but it makes the point.

Would the word of God be full of these hypocrisies? Isn't God perfect? How are we as imperfect beings capable of understanding or comprehending the word of God?

Mankind can't even explain the universe, much less God.

To me, God is acceptance, a powerful entity that does not need worship, but rather gives us a free will and consequences to learn from our choices.

God is not in need of tithing, nor would he/she/it want us to kill each other over whom is more right about their beliefs, that is not god, that is ignorance.

Do you think God cares if someone is Gay? Because God made them that way....God knows they are Gay, and he(gonna use that term to make it easier) is not coming down to smite all gay people.

I would have a lot better view of religion if people were not strapping bombs to their chests hoping to be reach some alleged martyrdom status, or people would remember the line "judge not lest ye be judged" when regarding homosexuals.

Because to me, God made man, with all of our flaws and loves us just the same, it is not God killing man, it is man killing man, over ridiculous arguments, some that are centuries old.

    To me...GOD is immenently tolerant.

Man, nay religion- not so much....

Except for the fact that your example is not an example of hypocrisy. If hypocrisiy abounds in the Bible, it should not be that difficult for you to cite a real example.

*** Man is fallible so even though the Bible is essentially the word of God, man had a hand in it.

Mankind can't even explain the universe, much less God.

    *** True

To me, God is acceptance, a powerful entity that does not need worship, but rather gives us a free will and consequences to learn from our choices.

*** I agree with the essence of this

God is not in need of tithing, nor would he/she/it want us to kill each other over whom is more right about their beliefs, that is not god, that is ignorance.

*** I agree with the essence of this

Do you think God cares if someone is Gay? Because God made them that way....God knows they are Gay, and he(gonna use that term to make it easier) is not coming down to smite all gay people.

    *** God loves all people

I would have a lot better view of religion if people were not strapping bombs to their chests hoping to be reach some alleged martyrdom status, or people would remember the line "judge not lest ye be judged" when regarding homosexuals.

*** Yep...those things are morally wrong

Because to me, God made man, with all of our flaws and loves us just the same, it is not God killing man, it is man killing man, over ridiculous arguments, some that are centuries old.

    *** I agree

    To me...GOD is immenently tolerant.

    *** Probably too much so

Thank you for the sanitary response and I apologize for my tone. The personal interest and sense of violation you presented made me think you were personally affected. If more of your posts were in the same muted vein as this one, rather than purposefully overstated and insulting, your views might be easier to digest.

I think your expectation that the school should vet with parents anything that you deem controversial is irrational and short-sighted. You put yourself in the same category as those who do not want to teach sex education, or birth control, or evolution, or whatever... Where do you draw the line?

While we agree in certain respects about religion, it is not necessary to repeatedly insult those who do believe. I have the utmost respect for people of faith whose beliefs become reality and alters their life and the lives of others in positive ways. We disagree that it has caused more harm than good.

If you believe it and it changes you for the better, does it matter whether it is real or not? I don't find that threatening.

I will reserve final judgment until I die, and though not a believer, will try to live my life in a manner that would befit any religion's expectation of human behavior.

    I don't think its a big deal

A group came in to explain islam and what the believe to kids at a school. educational and informative. It's always good to learn about others and teach kids to keep an open mind.

and yes if someone came and did a lecture on atheism i still wouldn't care. this is america, diversity is what defines us.

Rhester, you and Max are two posters that I know believe completely in Jesus and the bible and while I am on the other side of the fence, I can respect that you have found peace in your beliefs.

That is all anyone can do.......find peace, and then hopefully that grows to understanding.

Two people can have diametrically opposed beliefs about religion and still find understanding, that is where we all should attempt to get to...

If you are happy in your religious choice, then good for you. Be happy and treat other people no matter what they believe with respect and it will all be good from my stand point.

Just keep religion out of school.

There is a huge difference between "religion in school" and "teaching about religions" in school.

There is a difference between being required to face Mecca/Crucifix and recite a prayer and being taught that the Islamic/Christian religion is based upon...

Do you just refuse to acknowledge the difference?

I believe that he knows the differences and he has stated that teaching about religions in context of what is regularly learned is fine. This was one group's viewpoint on their religion though, can you not see the difference in that and teaching in a classroom?
