Cedric Benson's time with the Chicago Bears is up The troubled running back, whose relationship with the team soured further because of his second arrest in little more than a month Saturday, was waived by the team on Monday, sources told ESPN.com's John Clayton. Before his release, Benson made one last ditch effort to repair the situation, issuing an apology on Monday afternoon. "I apologize for making the poor decision to drink and drive during the early morning of Saturday, June 7th," he said in a statement. "Given the incident last month, it was a particularly bad decision. I have no excuse for this lack of judgment. Though I strongly believe that I am not guilty of any crime, I realize that the public and the Bears organization hold me to higher standard. Though my local attorneys will continue to work hard to prove my innocence, I confess to using poor judgment. Please accept my deepest apology." The Bears released the running back shortly thereafter. The Chicago Sun-Times reported on its Web site earlier in the day that Benson showed up at Monday's OTA and was sent home by coach Lovie Smith. "I know that he went to practice today and Lovie told him to go home," Benson's attorney Sam Bassett said before the release, according to the newspaper. "I don't know if it's because of the publicity or because it's a distraction, or if the Bears are trying to decide what to do. He's just kind of waiting to see what they tell him and what they are going to require of him. "His agent and business manager are doing some stuff with the Bears that I am not privy to. He knows the Bears may release him. He hopes they don't. He knows he screwed up." Benson was arrested on a drunken driving charge in Austin, Texas, early Saturday and Bears officials said they would treat the matter seriously. Benson's attorney said the former Texas star had a few drinks with dinner but didn't think he was intoxicated and cooperated with police. The arrest comes a month after Benson was charged in Austin with boating while intoxicated and resisting arrest. He has said neither charge is true, and those cases are pending. At a fan event at Soldier Field in Chicago on Saturday, Angelo said he hadn't spoken to Benson but called the most recent situation unfortunate. "Disappointment is too much an often-used word when we're talking about Cedric, and the number one lesson for every player is protect your job," Angelo said. "So we're all held accountable for our actions." Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.
Ill take him. Who hasn't yelled at some a-hole cops while drunk on a boat anyways? Watch the Boys scoop him up and continue to get deeper. And dirtier. The way I like em.
I agree, but I think they will pass due to his chrachter issues... wouldn't be suprised is the cowgirls pickd him up though.
I think my only problem with Benson is that he kind of sucks. The Bears had so many great RBs back in the day, lately they've had nothing but bust after bust.
If he was any good, or any average, or even any below average, he could have gotten another DUI this summer and still stayed on the team. The issue here isn't the drinking. It's that he sucks. The drinking just makes for a good (and welcome) excuse to cut him.
The Texans don't need him. He is a dip s*** who also isn't very good a football. Not a great combination...and this is coming from a UT fan.
Being slow is bad for the system. You have to find the hole and get through it quickly...something he has always been terrible at.
i disagree, one thing he was good at at texas was attacking the line, I don't know how well he did that at chicago.
I think he is better than what he has shown. Or could be. I have seen some good spurts from him. Then the inconsistency. But I got the impression Bears fans still had a lot of hope for him. I don't think he is bad. Not any worse than the Texans entire historical slew of RBs. Edit: Well except Davis. Or Williams. Or whatever his name his now. Watch someone bring up Stacey Mack.
If he went to Florida State instead of Texas, nobody here would be clamoring for him. He's probably one of the main reasons the Bears went from playing in the super bowl to being a terrible team.
dude was a top five pick, yeah playing for texas he has a lot of fans on this site, but he wasn't swiss cheese neither
I seem to remember too much dancing behind the line. He wouldn't just make a move and go. He had gotten better at it by the time he left, but it still wasn't his strength.
I complete disagree with this. If anything, Cedric excelled at hitting the hole and hitting it hard. Obviously he hasn't shown much (if anything) in the NFL but like Ziggy posted, I think he is better than what he has shown. I don't think there is any chance the Texans add Benson due to his character issues, but as far as being a fit, he would fit the one-cut system.
who cares about character on the football field. hell just sign richard simmons if you care that much sign ced!
