Convice Me that We Should Keep Our #1 Draft Pick...

...rather than trade it in a package deal that includes some combination of the following players - Battier, B. Jackson, Brooks, and Head - for a proven 3rd scorer. I'd be willing to include Landry or Scola in the deal as well if it's the right player like a Ron Artest. I'd be happy if the Rockets could land Travis Outlaw.

All the reports I've read indicate that this is a weak draft. Thus, it's unlikely the Rockets picking so low will get anything worthwhile. So I've come to the conclusion that this pick needs to be part of a larger deal to land somebody that can contribute immediately. So are there any convincing arguments for keeping this pick out there?

Lol, I meant Convince not Convice. I'm sure I'll get a lot crap for that. Sorry, it's early for me.

If we dont get CDR or Batum we should probably try to move the pick.

WE need to do the best available move for the team. That may mean a trade package or a move up into the lottery if avail. Keeping a sucky late 1st :D round pick probably won't do a great job of building this team. But the other options mean getting another team to agree and the Grizz have already learned their lesson.....

Im pretty sure that is the ideal scenario for most fans. It just doesn't look likely that we could put together a good enough package for teams to bite. Thats why im guessing we wait until the trade deadline to deal when teams become interested in our expirings.

    Here are the reasons:

    1. Our first rounder doesn't have much trade value. By itself or in a package. Our future 1sts hold more value than the one we have currently.

    2. Morey did pretty good with late round picks last year. Let him fish around again rather than just giving the pick away.

    3. Highly unlikely we land that vet 3rd scorer. I know everyone is clamoring for some high profile move, but let's be real here -- unless something falls into our laps(like the Scola deal), we are most likely going into the season with the same crew we did last year.

What are you talikng about this draft is very deep and a strong draft class.
If nobody slips to 25 like Batum or Speights (guys with lottery talent) then I want us to trade the pick to Minesotta for their 31 and 34 and pick up guys like Bill Walker , JJ Hickson , Courtney Lee.

The problem with low first round picks is that now that the EURO is so strong foreign players can choose to take more money and stay in Europe and since there is a locked in rookie scale, they would have to take a major pay cut to come over and play in the USA.

That diminises the option of taking a euro and stashing him over there for a couple of years for seasoning.

    Which limits your options......

So, if they keep the pick...great.....but I would think they are looking to move up in the draft....at least I hope so.

Alot of the reports I have read indicate this is a deep draft. The rockets will get a future rotational player with this pick and they can also select a big on the rookie salary scale. Bigs are expensive in the free agent market.

Morey said himself that more than likely where heading into the next season with the same crew and dont expect big change untill around the end of the next FA deadline.

    1. Even if we trade it, are going to find a quality player for it?

    2. I think we should trade up, instead (15 -21). Truth be told, we're not going to get a good player, unless we trade for someone who is in our nucleus (T-Mac, Yao, Battier, Scola, Landry, and Alston).

    3. I say shoot for BR or CDR or maybe decent big man, if it is not avaliable, maybe look for a good solid athletic player (SF/SG) who could improve, if that is not available, then I agree we can trade it. We don't need another player filling up bench right now.

CriscoKidd is right in that our first-rounder next year holds much more value than our late pick this year. If one of these elusive trades come along for a Mike Miller or whoever you would expect next year's pick to be the one included rather than this year.

Plus, this year's draft actually appears to be pretty deep. Guys like Donte Green, J.J. Hickson, Nicolas Batum and Bill Walker are all world-class athletes with upside through the roof. Guys like Brandon Rush, CDR, Roy Hibbert, Courtney Lee and a few others are all NBA ready. Those are just a few examples of players I would kill to have with the 25th pick since every single one of them could potentially make an impact on day 1.

I think that if the rockets don“t find anything useful to trade for or in the draft we can always ask San Antonio for Splitter rights and their first rounder.
Splitter can opt out of his deal in two years and he will be more willing to come here to play alongside Scola (one of his best friends).

We should speak with Fran Vasquez in Spain and see if he will come over. If he's willing, trade the pick to orlando with Head for Fran's rights and Redick.

the one thing the rockets have been poor at doing lately (may change soon though) is getting the most out of their picks, they have traded a lot of them.

if you look at a lot of good teams out there they have taken their higher picks and stuck with them and developed them into good role players for their system. I am hoping the rockets do this too, the way the league is nowadays the only way you can really get a solid team for multiple years is through shrewd trades and developing players that you drafted. Trying to sign a FA or make a blockbuster trade will usually hurt your franchise in the short run either through cap space or depth.

Morey and adelman did a superb job in bringing along scola, landry, brooks and I would even consider Novak (he hardly played as a rookie) and they all contributed at some point in the season. I would give them a chance again to get some young guys to bring in and bring them around. You figure that the 4 players I mentioned above will only get better and more comfortable now in adelman's system. And its much easier to sign your own RFA or UFA than it is another teams.

Bill Walker. Draft someone good like him and suddenly that worthless #25 pick turns into a nice bargaining chip.

Having a "weak draft" seems more significant to teams with higher picks. If you look at other weak drafts, you can still find solid players, they're just not more concentrated at the top of the order.

In a way that gives us an advantage if you believe that our scouting is better than other organizations. I do. Morey is only a couple pixels away from money. Letterologists would be enthused and doing ninja flips if that word existed.

Maybe it would be useful to think about the kind of player were likely to pursue size and style wise and who else is looking for the same thing. The draft could be strong in players we're interested in but weak in kind we're not.

I don't care enough to give it much thought. Our immediate success isn't very likely to depend on a low 1st round pick with our depth. Not that that's always true. Hello Cassell!

Trade the pick with a package deal. The chances of us getting a serviceable player is pretty slim. I would say 15% that the pick will be with us after 5 years.
