Your connection is probably the problem, did you configure your router(if you are using one?) I have played Madden 08, own Call of Duty 4 and play online all the time. Lag is virtually nonexistent. When I first got my PS3 I was worried about using WI-FI for online, my PS3 consistently gets 60% strength(I thought was bad for gaming), however my online gaming has not been affected at all. It's pretty sweet. As for the hardware, Playstation systems have always been tough to figure out but they did this so that it can be more powerful in the long run. Check out the launch PS2 titles and then look at the games that came out once the developers got the architecture down. On the other side, the Xbox's graphics probably won't be improving at the same rate the PS3 will. The PS3's max output will probably be greater than the 360. But graphics aren't the only thing that determines how powerful a console is. There is stuff like load times, AI, sound etc. that are all as important. Graphics just get pointed out because it's the easiest.
And MS handled it well. Extended all Xboxes sold during launch warranties to 3 years. Send in your broke box, get a new one in about a week's time. They pay for it all, postage, everything. I'm a gamer, a fan of all games, regardless of console/platform. I've had just about every console ever created since I was old enough to game and own the systems or buy them myself. For whatever reason, I still have yet to buy the PS3. I was considering buying yet another computer or laptop instead of a PS3...don't know why. I guess since I already have the 360, I'd just be paying 400+ for a bluray player. I should be able to get a standalone slightly cheaper no? Hell, I don't know, haha.
I've played it at two friends house's. One had ethernet, one had wireless. Both much choppier than 360. Maybe you're used to it. I'm not saying it isn't playable. I still pwn all the n000000000bs.
COD4 ONLINE ON PS3 is lag free most of the time unless you're playing people in Asia and its about the same as XBL.
I was worried about wi-fi when I first got my ps3 as well. I tweaked my Linksys router and moved it toward the center of my house and i get a consistent 90% signal and no lag.
I never said anything about lag. I said it is choppy. Like it has less FPS or something. If you play it on 360 for awhile, then play PS3, it feels choppy.
this may not be the right thread but I have a PS3 and a HD ready TV .... brand RCA ... about 3 years old. It has a DVI input but not a HDMI. So I bought a HDMI to DVI cable and hooked the PS3 up that way. When the I turned on the PS3 it recognized the HDMI hook up and asked me if I wanted to use it and I said yes. Then it check my settings and I guess it found that my TV's max resolution is 1080i, and I accepted that. I put on a game (GTA4) and started playing. I noticed a great improvement in picture quality but the picture seemed too wide for my TV. My TV is a wide screen. I do realize this may be a TV issue and not a PS3 issue. I can ussually change the format of my screen with the TV remote. I guess when the DVI input is in use it deactivates that option because it wouldn't work on my remote when I tried changing it in an attempt to make it fit the screen. I went on the setting for the PS3 and couldn't find anything that looked like something I could use. I went on my TV's menu and basically could only use the horizontal shift. It helped when I centered it but it still seems like I need another inch or 2 on either side. Can someone help me with this?
Already been mentioned several times, but the differences are mostly due to the developers being more comfortable with the 360. It is a bit more flexible than the PS3, so developers don't have to work as hard to get good performance. It takes more work (or better design anyway) to get the same performance on the PS3. Developing for the PS3 seems to result in more efficient code for both platforms though. Generally, if you put in the hard work to properly design your code for the PS3, it can probably be used to improve performance on the 360 as well. This basically results in some great results on both platforms. Kind of guessing here, but I think games like Burnout Paradise, COD4, and GTAIV probably took an approach sort of like this, resulting in games that look and perform great on both platforms. You can probably contrast this to something like Madden, which isn't all that impressive technically speaking on either platform, even though there is a somewhat significant difference between them. BioShock isn't really a good example. Besides the fact that the PS3 version will be released a year after the 360 version, the game isn't really all that impressive technically speaking IMO. It does have great art design though. Maybe BioShock 2 will be a better example, assuming it is multi-platform. Is this only for online play, or is it evident in single-player as well? Also, if you think it is a drop in FPS, how big of a drop do you think it is? COD4 is 60FPS on both IIRC. If it is just online, it really sounds like a lag issue, or some sort of networking issue. It might not be the connection of your friends, but the people that you played against (maybe the host has a bad connection). And if you didn't test this very much, it could have just been a weird night or two for the PSN (maybe a MGS4 trailer was released or something). I skimmed over some posts online, and I didn't really notice any differences between COD4 online on PS3 vs 360 (most said they were the same). Some people had lag, but that was happening on both platforms, usually due to similar reasons. Maybe I should have checked out a few more posts though.
The best way to describe it would be to blink really fast while your playing. Like it is missing something in between. But not as bad as blinking, just trying to make an analogy. One good thing I noticed on PS3, is that when you kill someone, the death registers quicker than on 360.
I know that 360 sports games are a lot better and smoother than the ones on ps3...last years madden is a good example. There was a video comparison between the two and the 360 ran a lot smoother. It may be because it was the first year madden was on ps3, but from what the madden developers were saying, the 360 is a lot easier to make a game for because it's so much similar to a computer than the ps3...I guess we'll see if that holds true after this years madden comes out.
I have both systems. I think the graphical differences don't mean anything. Generally, 360 has sharper textures, PS3 wins in anti-aliasing. It's just nitpicking though. I will say that Madden runs way better on the 360. The only meaningful differences between systems, to me, are 1. Games Just depends on what you like. If you're way into FPSs, then 360 is the way to go, period. No two ways about it. There just happen to be more PS3 exclusives that I care about: Tekken 6, FF13, and Uncharted: Drake's Fortune. I like Ratchet & Clank as well. 2. Controllers 360 controllers own for shooters. The "triggers" are very nice. Good resistance on the analogs, while the PS3's are a little looser, seems to me. I don't think the PS3 "triggers" are as nice. But I do like that a few games make good use of motion-sensitive control (Ratchet and Clank especially). 3. Non-gaming features PS3 destroys 360 in non-gaming features, IMO. It's a Blu-ray player, it's a great DVD upscaler, and it doesn't break nearly as often. It also runs cooler and quieter. Used to be. That's kinda going away, actually. A number of developers have figured out that developing on the PS3 and then porting to 360 is more effective. That's part of the reason the performance gap is shrinking, it seems. EDIT: and naturally, I didn't notice that RC had addressed this already, haha. Carry on.
i have a 360...i love it but i just bought a ps3 and nba 08 + resistance for 280 from dell EDIT: was going to post the link, but apparently the deal has expired
It no longer holds true. EA had a community day, no one could tell the difference between the 360 and PS3 version. EA really screwed up with the PS3 football titles last year.
As far as graphics go, I don't see much difference, if it all. The games are much better on Xbox 360, plus there are more of them. The online service is better on 360 and more options. I also like the Achievements idea on 360. It adds replay to all the games you play. The advantages the PS3 has over 360 is that there are less occurences of breaking down and the Blu-Ray is included.
Well... I read somewhere that 18% of 360's are messed up and mine was in that 18% after about 2 hours out of the box. 2 days later I call Microsoft, say the 360 was crap and added in a few curse words. The same day I buy a PS3 and I've been happy ever since. So my opinion: PS3 > XBOX 360
