    HILLARY RAISES ASSASSINATION ISSUE
    DEFENDS LONG-RUNNING CAMPAIGN
    By GEOFF EARLE

    May 23, 2008 --

Hillary Clinton today brought up the assassination of Sen. Robert Kennedy while defending her decision to stay in the race against Barack Obama.

"My husband did not wrap up the nomination in 1992 until he won the California primary somewhere in the middle of June, right? We all remember Bobby Kennedy was assassinated in June in California. I don't understand it," she said, dismissing calls to drop out.

Watch a video of the editorial board meeting here.

    Obama's camp immediately fired back.

"Sen. Clinton's statement before the Argus Leader editorial board was unfortunate and has no place in this campaign," Obama campaign spokesman said in a statement.

Clinton made her comments at a meeting with the Sioux Falls Argus-Leader's editorial board while campaigning in South Dakota, where she complained that, "People have been trying to push me out of this ever since Iowa."

Obama, the first African-American to advance so far in the race for the White House, has faced threats, sources have said.

Robert Kennedy, the younger brother of President John F. Kennedy, was gunned down in 1968 after winning the California primary. He had been a hero on the left for his civil rights agenda and calls to end the war in Vietnam.

Barack Obama, who leads Clinton by nearly 200 delegates and has already secured a majority of pledged delegates, has been the subject of threats. Early in the campaign, the Secret Service gave him a security detail at the request of Sen. Richard Durbin (D-Illinois).

Clinton criticized an "urgency" to end the campaign prematurely, saying, "Historically, that makes no sense."

She later issued an apology for the remark.

"I regret that if my referencing that moment of trauma for our entire nation and in particular the Kennedy family was in any way offensive. I certainly had no intention of that whatsoever," the former first lady said.

Clinton spokesman Howard Wolfson defended the comments to The Post, "She was talking about the length of the race and using the '68 election as an example of how long the races in the past have gone -- she used her husband's race in the same vein."

WOW. Awful and scary. I would not put anything past this woman. How anyone could vote for her is beyond me.

Just bizarre. Not sure what that gets her, really, other than scorn. The Democrat Circus continues.

Wow. Does anyone still think Hillary has the interests of the Democratic Party above all else?

On a separate note - even if Obama WERE to be assassinated by June, she would still become the nominee. She doesn't need run an aggressive campaign for that reason. It's a silly excuse.

    She apologized quickly

"I regret that if my referencing that moment of trauma for our entire nation and in particular the Kennedy family was in any way offensive. I certainly had no intention of that whatsoever," the former first lady said.

The episode occurred as Clinton campaigned in advance of the June 3 South Dakota primary.

Responding to a question from the Sioux Falls Argus Leader editorial board about calls for her to drop out of the race, she said: "My husband did not wrap up the nomination in 1992 until he won the California primary somewhere in the middle of June, right? We all remember Bobby Kennedy was assassinated in June in California. You know I just, I don't understand it," she said, dismissing the idea of abandoning the race.

Clinton said she didn't understand why, given this history, some Democrats were calling for her to quit.

Her remark about an assassination during a primary campaign drew a quick response from aides to Democratic presidential front-runner Barack Obama.

"Senator Clinton's statement before the Argus Leader editorial board was unfortunate and has no place in this campaign," said Obama spokesman Bill Burton.

Clinton spokesman Mo Elleithee said the senator was only referring to her husband and Kennedy "as historical examples of the nominating process going well into the summer and any reading into it beyond that would be inaccurate and outrageous."

Even so, Clinton decided within a couple of hours to make a personal apology.

"I was discussing the Democratic primary history and in the course of that discussion mentioned the campaigns of both my husband and Senator (Robert) Kennedy waged in California in June in 1992 and 1968 and I was referencing those to make the point that we have had nomination primary contests that go into June. That's a historic fact," she said.

"The Kennedys have been much on my mind the last days because of Senator Kennedy," she added, referring to Sen. Edward M. Kennedy's recent diagnosis of a brain tumor. "I regret that if my referencing that moment of trauma for our entire nation and in particular the Kennedy family was in any way offensive. I certainly had no intention of that whatsoever.

"My view is that we have to look to the past to our leaders who have inspired us, give us a lot to live up to, and I'm honored to hold Senator Kennedy's seat in the United States Senate from the state of New York and have the highest regard for the Kennedy family," she said.

    ======-=============

Yeah...we'll get to see how dedicated her followers are after this.

I keep telling people I know that I wish Hillary would have ran against Bush 4 years ago. That would have been spectacular. I think they both would have arranged their own assassination attempts so that they could blame the other party. It would have been the dirtiest, ugliest, and greatest campaign season ever.

Hillary defenders please speak up. Would like to hear your view on this.

Just another part of Hillary's incredible crash and burn. Does anybody think she still has a chance to be the veep choice? If so, tell us all what you are smoking because it must be one powerful hallucinogen.

I can't ever remember this many assassination references for one candidate in one election campaign. It's somewhat unsettling, I have this uneasy feeling that if they keep talking about it/referencing it, then there's more to it than just a slip of the tongue.

I am not the paranoid type, but this is just plain strange, it's not the first time someone has mentioned a possibility of an Obama assassination. I am worried that this might become a self-fulfilling prophecy at some point, if people keep talking about it. May be 50 Cent was onto something...

I cannot believe she would actually try to assassinate Obama just to win the nomination. Unbelievable.

Time says she said the same in March:

    http://www.time-blog.com/swampland/2008/05/hillarys_bizarre_rfk_comment.html

Though she has now apologized for that very strange and tasteless comment to the Argus-Leader, this was not the first time she's said it. This from her interview with TIME Managing Editor Richard Stengel, published March 6:

    ---
TIME: Can you envision a point at which--if the race stays this close--Democratic Party elders would step in and say, "This is now hurting the party and whoever will be the nominee in the fall"?

CLINTON: No, I really can't. I think people have short memories. Primary contests used to last a lot longer. We all remember the great tragedy of Bobby Kennedy being assassinated in June in L.A. My husband didn't wrap up the nomination in 1992 until June. Having a primary contest go through June is nothing particularly unusual.
    ---

Her excuse now is that the Kennedys have been "much on my mind these days" with the illness of Senator Edward Kennedy, but that doesn't explain what brought it to mind more than two months ago.

UPDATE: H/T to commenter Elvis Elvisberg, who notes that even the reference to her own husband's campaign was wrong. Bill Clinton's primary race was effectively over in March.

That is really, really bad -- especially with recent Ted Kennedy news.

I think highly of Hillary in some ways, but this is uncalled for. I think Obama is everything TraderJorge has eloquently described, and I concur Obama is just plain bad on several levels.. but the guy deserves a chance, and if anything the bitterness and obvious in-it-to-win-it (at all costs) mentality of herself first exudes NOT being a leader...

Now, if something (God forbid) does happen....How can you not question the people in Hillary's circle?

I was thinking about that during Huckleberry's slip of the tongue. The more the media mentions it, the more extremists think it's possible.

    Wrong Hillary!

I missed this the first read. Her pathological nature comes out again. She just can't help herself.

This somehow reminds me of that classic Simpsons episode where Homer becomes a boxer under the management of Moe. Homer's told to visualize how he's going to beat the Mike Tyson character and he imagines Tyson having a heart attack.
