The wife and I want to take a weekend (3 or 4 days) trip sometime in August (before she has to go back to work) and I'm looking for some ideas.

Don't really want too long a drive time. But if it's worth it I'm open to suggestions.

Already considered SA/riverwalk idea, but we did that just a few years ago.

Thinking about Corpus, maybe a nice hotel/condo, do the beach/aquarium thing.

Maybe a bed and breakfast/cabin somewhere? I wouldn't know where to look.

    Anyone got any suggestions?

With gas as much as it is, why not Galveston? It's got all of the things you listed.

this looks like a fun trip

This 9.9-mile reach of the Guadalupe River in Comal County is lined with an abundance of mature trees and a spectacular mix of limestone cliffs and shelves. Paddlers will enjoy an exciting 3-6 hour ride on a variety of rapids between gentle stretches.

Seriously, people in Houston always overlook Galveston.

Granted, the beaches ain't exactly Cancun, but the island/city itself has a great feel to it and is a great place to spend a peaceful weekend with the wife. There's lots to do and it also won't cost and arm and a leg to book a room there.

Hint: Think West end, not East.

A lot of other big cities wish they had a place like Galveston just an hour away.

This is a GREAT trip. About 16 of us head down the hill country every July 4 weekend. The host/hostess has this beautiful cabin they built (they're potters) that we pile into for 3 days of pure fun and party and food.

And every day we're having a blast floating, fishing, and creating general meyham on the Guadalupe. Nothing to get us in trouble with the law, but we do make the best of it. :D

Just to clarify, I have no problem with Galveston. We like it. Its just that I live like 20 minutes from the island. We go there all the time.

Looking for something different/a little more of a 'trip', that's all.

My family goes to Mustang Island in Port Aransas every 2 years or so. I think the drive is worth the nicer beaches. There's a condo/resort/hotel place called Port Royale right on the beach. We always stay there. Beautiful rooms with a unique feel. I don't think I ever remember a trip there that wasn't a blast.

    check it out here: http://www.port-royal.com/

    Blair House Inn

Get a cottage. Absolutely do the Saturday night dinner. Thank me when you get back :)

If you want some ideas on things to do around there, email me through the board and I'll hook you up. You will not be disappointed.

    Go camping in Toledo Bend!!!

Its just about 3 hours from houston, right at the Louisianna border. The nicest camping experience I have ever had. They have cabins on the water for about $90 a night. Great cabins, AC, full size living room and kitchen, two bedrooms one with a queen sized bed and the other has two sets of bunk beds, plus a fullsize bathroom. The living room has a pull out bed in the sofa, so technically it sleeps 10 people comfortably. Bring some bikes, fishing poles, and some food for the weekend. The cabins are really nice and I stress its the nicest thing your going to find for $90 a night. It would be a romantic getaway, camopng but without enduring the rough outdoors too much. There is a area for each cabin to have there own fire, fully equipped with a grill. The bathrooms are super clean inside the cabin. It even has a heat fan that drys you off after you get out of the shower. My fiancee loves it and begs me to go all the time. We have been 3 times with perfect experiences each time. BYW, its 10 times better than what your picturing in your head!

Some good ideas; I really appreciate it. Keep it coming!

MB, I think I'll probably shoot you an email for some info.

Though that Port Royal looks pretty nice...
