There are three adorable kittens in my backyard at the moment, without a mother to be seen. I can not take them in, but am giving them milk and the like. They appear to be a few weeks old, as their eyes are open, their ears are perked up and they are walking around. They are currently huddling in an inaccessible part of my backyard near the fence between my home and my abandoned neighbor's house. Bear in mind that there is a hole in the fence and they are only about a foot from that and what is sure to be a bounty of rodents and other eats.

There are wild cats on my block that fend for themselves and I am positive birthed these. I do not want to turn them into the SPCA, as they could get euthanized, but I can not keep them. Will giving them food cause them to stay or is it possible that a mother cat is out there hunting for food? Do mother cats forage? Any help is greatly appreciated.

they are now your cats because they arent going away.

there was a cat that found it's way to my backyard, and my mom fed it for a bit, and it has never left.

it's gone now, but boy was that cat annoying.

Here in Dallas, we have a no kill shelter called Operation Kindness. They won't euthanize any animals that are turned over to them. Perhaps you can find one of those type of places nearby your home?

Not sure what's in your area....but it's worth a search on Google I would imagine. If not, you could always foster them until you can find a home.

I work at the SPCA so let me clear up a couple of things...

    - Kittens must be 8 weeks old, or 2lbs each to guarantee that they will not be euthanized. If they do meet those requirements, they will be safe since the SPCA no longer euthanizes for cage space.

    - Do not feed them regular (cow) milk. They must get kitten milk or they could very likely become ill.

    - If you find the mother, bring her in too. Granted that she's healthy, she'll be spayed and adopted out to a good home.

Let me know if you need to know anything else.

Thanks for all of your help. I removed the milk, which I'm almost certain they did not drink any of; none of it was missing in the measurement. They are huddled up and if they are there tomorrow, I am going to bring them in to either you guys or a no-kill shelter. When you mention those limits, are you saying that if they are >2 pounds they won't be euthanized or they must be at least two pounds an above to guarantee not being put to sleep? I have no way to tell how old they are. The mother is most certainly too wild to try to catch; she and a few other cats roam the yards of my neighborhood and keep to themselves. I'll see what I can do.

Take them to the no kill shelter. Or put an ad in the paper to give them to good homes. Make sure MoesTavern doesn't ask you for one, he hates animals - not joking.

Sorry, I meant to say 2.5 pounds each. But yeah, if they're at least 2.5 pounds then they can be taken into the shelter and given the spay/neuter surgery and adopted out. If they are brought to the shelter below that weight, nothing is guaranteed.

Another thing is that you should handle them as much as possible so that they get used to people. It will only increase their chances of getting adopted out.

It sickens me when irresponsible people abandon their pets leaving them all alone and roaming around neighborhoods. Where I live here in Bissonet, there are hundreds of stray cats just roaming around and I can't feed them all...
