The Terps are retiring 3 jerseys before their last game at Cole Field House vs Virginia. Apparently, the #'s are Francis' #23, Dixon's #3 and Baxter's #35...with all due respect to Stevie Franchise, there is no way he deserves to have his number hang from the rafters at Cole (and everntually the new arena) for playing one year at Maryland. It sends a bad message in my opinion.

I thought the same thing. It is not like I have enough knowledge of Maryland Basketball but I was somewhat stunned!

NJRocket, you make a good point. In this case it all depends on what Gary Williams wants. GW puts part of the emphasis on how a player represents the school after his playing days, but in my opinion, I think if any player makes "All-American" he should have his jersey fly in the rafters. You can go either direction and be right. FREDTERP

So this is different and separate from the "honoring" of his jersey he just received, right?

Does UM have a hallowed basketball history? I'm guessing they're retiring his jersey because he may have helped put Maryland on the map? That, and he is a celebrity. Oh, or it could be all of the victims of the natural disaster last year. Didn't he buy 500 people dinner or something?

The other 2 guys are 4 year players who helped Maryland and Gary Williams to its 1st final 4. Dixon may end up leading the team in all time steals and possibly points as well. Baxter has been a 15 and 10 guy practically every year since he was a soph. They both meant a lot more to Maryland hoops than Steve ever did. Like Fredterp said, if they are doing it to honor his achievements in AND out of college, then I dont have a problem with it. But to put Steve up in the rafters along side of guys like John Lucas, Tom Macmillan, Albert King, Buck Williams, Walt Williams, Len Bias Len Elmore etc.

Now that I look at the list I just jotted down, I guess there is a possibility that their accomplishments outside of Maryland may have something to do with getting a # retired
