I'm thinking about trading in (or selling) my car, which I still owe money on and buying a car from my in-laws with cash. Where is the best place to trade one in if you're not buying from them. Carmax? And how does it work if you still owe money on the car?

Go see Dusty "The ATM Machine" at...well, I forget where. I just hear Matt Jackson tell me about him all the time on 610. He gets more money for your trade in than anyone. ANYONE.

you're going to get screwed on the trade-in...BIG TIME! sell privately if you can.

if you owe less than what you're selling for, just take the money and pay off the loan. if you owe more than you're what your selling it for, well, that just sux. :)

Unload it on craigslist. Just make sure and use the words "firm price" and "no trades - cash only" in your ad.

CarMax might buy it. I sold a car at CarMax independent of buying a new car.

Your best bet is to sell it privately.

If you don't want to fool with that, take it to CarMax

After getting a CarMax quote, take it to a couple of dealerships and laugh as the lowball you.

Be sure to look up the Blue Book Value beforehand

Kind of what I was thinking.

What kind of a deal did they give you. I really don't want to deal with selling it myself if I don't have to. Too many weirdos out there reading the classifieds...

First car I sold was to CarMax. They gave me close to Blue Book Value. Offered 35% more than the dealership and about 15% less than I would have been able to sell it via paper

Second car I took there they actually offered me less than the dealership did.

    Think it depends

I took a car to a dealership that we had a history with (bought a few cars from them over the years) and they made us a "decent" offer (a little more than the trade-in value in Kelly's Blue Book) -- so you never know

    ima,

If you owe (I presume the bank) money, that means you don't have a clear title to the car.

You'll need this before you sell it to anyone.

Now if you trade, that's another story, they'll just add your upside down amount to the new car tag.

I forgot to add that if you bought an extended warranty when you got your car call the dealership and tell them you want to cancel it. I got back $1100.00 thats if the extended warranty hasn't expired yet if not they will send you the remaining balance.

    Interesting, thanks.

I'm really just looking to lose this car payment. Wife's car is paid off and I can pay cash for this other car which is bigger than mine and a really good deal since it's from family. That would mean we'd have 2 cars with no payments.
