So I'm in California this weekend and finally tried In-N-Out Burger...

OMG Dan's FTW! Give me Dan's, or give me death! I've never tried Fran's though I'd imagine they're quite similar, seeing as they were once married and know each others stuff. I suppose I'll branch out and give his ex-wife's half of things a try sometime...

Forget the chains - Lankford Grocery, Rudyard's or Christian's Totem have the best burgers I've tasted.

While on the subject about all these burger chains.
Has anyone tried the Shake Shack in NYC?
    http://www.shakeshacknyc.com/

I was there a week ago and we went there.
We waited in line that circled around the park for atleast 20 minutes and I don't see what was so special about their burgers and fries. There was a Wendy's accross the street and I bet that would have been just as good. By the way, a cheesburger, fries, and drink was about $11

Trader Joe's being a close second, at least for me.

    Kudos, meggoleggo!

Trust me... Fran's isn't nearly as good, or as cheap, as Dan's, at least the Dan's on Manchaca at Ben White (the very best one, FYI). Fran took it into a different direction and disappointed me. Dan's is awesome. They even use Angus beef and still hand bread their chicken fried steak sandwiches. Cut the fries from real spuds. Hand dip their onion rings. Use real malt, instead of that god-awful syrup so many places use now. When in Austin and looking for great, cheap fast food, Dan's is the place. The one on Manchaca still has booths. I go there because my bad back digs the booths and my taste buds dig the food.

Hamburger, fries and a malt for under $5 bucks!

Then maybe I won't try Fran's after all!

I frequent that very Dan's because:
    1) they take plastic
    2) they're the other closest Dan's to my place of employment
    3) the first closest Dan's to my work doesn't take plastic, and I don't carry cash.

Live in TX but travel to Cali all the time:

Becks Prime > Fat Burger > Whataburger > In and Out

    Fat Burger is freakin' great.

Del Taco just blows, but I'm not a fan of Taco Bell either.

I'll second Barry's. We used to go there all the time in Junior High and that place is awesome.

I've eaten In-N-Out, and I was surprisingly unimpressed. Maybe my expectations were too high. I agree with Pole about the fries being a big disappointment and a big part of the experience for me. I don't know. It was good, but it didn't change my life.

I tell ya.. I liked the good ol' days when the fries were crisp, hot, and fresh.

Today's fries are limp, soggy grease sponges. If you ever wonder why your fries are so damn soggy, it's because the restaurant has gone too long without replacing the grease in their fryer. The more often they replace the grease, the more money it costs them.

Shake Shack is about the custard really. The burgers are nothing special.

Just tried it once but In-N-Out seems overrated. Guy I was with purposely took me there but I was unimpressed. It wasn't bad, just not what it was made out to be. Coulda been a fluke. *shrug*

Did you try it Animal Style?

Gotta get the fries Animal Style as well. I was unimpressed with their fries until I animalized them.

Lankford's is pretty good. I didn't need to eat the rest of the day.

    Rudyard's is OK.

Barry's near San Jac is now some Italian joint which is pretty good too

I'm not a big chain burger guy. I'd rather hit up any mom and pop joint.

Also, why do burgers at a bowling alley always taste fantastic
