I keep hearing from different people (sources) that say that Houston does not have Detroits pick this year. But, all year long I've heard that Houston will get the pick via Philadelphia because of the Turcan trade.

So, what's the deal is it Houston's pick or not. I've heard someone say that Detroit has an option all the way through the 2003 season. By then Detroit should be so bad that the Rockets would end up getting the top pick in that draft.

But, that just sweet lemons talking. I want the pick this year.

Thanks for posting this. Another way to say it, for those who don't pay attention to all these trades involving draft picks (like me), is "how many first round picks do we have this year"? Any insight would be appreciated.

Both the pick from Detroit and from Orlando aren't locks to come to us this year. I spoke to someone with the Rockets on this and they said Detroit has until 2004 -- it is NOT lottery protected but he/she didn't sound enthused about it coming to the Rockets this season.

Also, keep in mind we owe Vancouver a pick either this year, next year or the following season (2002).

In all 3 cases (the pick Detroit owes us, the pick Orlando owes us and the pick we owe Vancouver) I am told that those teams can acquire any first round pick and part with that one.

So we're owed 2 picks and owe one, but most likely all 3 will be late first rounders and doubtful any one of them will be this season.... but who knows. Hope this helps...

    Thks Clutch,

I was under the impression that the rocs would receive detroit's pick in one of the next four years.

These lottery pick questions keep getting asked -- and it is never clear because the deals are kind of nebulous. I think someone needs to publish a section on it that details what exactly the situation is concerning the picks. It would be great if CC.net did it, but it would also make sense on the Tank-a-thon page or even Davo's salary page. I'd do it myself but I have no capacity for web-programming no matter how easy I'm told it is. Besides, I do research as a profession, and I don't want to do it with my free-time (even at the office).

I agree. It is entirely too daunting a task to know the nuances of the many deals the Rockets have been involved in over the last twelve months. I had been wondering for weeks how the Detroit and Orlando picks would coincide with the one we owe Vancouver.

Could the Vancouver deal be structured where we give up a first round pick next year or could we stall them in a similar manner that Detroit and Orlando is attempting to stall us?
