    there's plenty

I haven't played MGS1 or MGS2 in a *long* time... but there's a lot in MGS3, seemed par for the course for the series. great game, get the Subsistence version

Anyone looking to get into the series, you can get the MGS Essentials collection for 30 bucks. Includes MGS1, MGS2: Substance, & MGS3: Subsistence.

I had played a little bit of MGS2 back when it released, but for some reason stopped. I was never interested in the series, but then the MGS4 trailers kind of made me want to go and see what all the fuss was about.

And wow... While I didn't play MGS1 (didn't think I could handle the graphics and controls because it was a PS1 title... but i may just go back and play this as well), I read all there was to read about it online before starting MGS2. You kind of have to know the stories of the previous games before starting the new ones. But by the time I finished MGS2, I found it to be truely one of the best games of all time. The story was just fantastic, and the gameplay was pretty great too. It was filled with memorable characters that you want to know more about after the game. Not a lot of games are able to do that.

Currently I'm around 9 hrs into MGS3, and it's every bit as good as MGS2, and the gameplay is definitely even better. I've put GTAIV on hold and I'm actually playing these PS2 masterpieces! I'm glad I decided to play through them because I was definitely missing out on one of the best series out there. That said, it is definitely not for everyone. The games require patience, and is not for someone who just likes to walk around killing everything that moves.

I went ahead and reserved the MGS4:LE from Gamestop after finishing MGS2. I'm freakin stoked for MGS4 now!

Thanks for the heads up about the MGS Essentials box set. I'd recommend playing through MGS1. It is a pretty quick game by today's standards, but still a ton of fun gameplay-wise.

the metal gear series is awesome but people really overrate the story aspect of it. they're convoluted and weighed down by heavy-handed moralizing. i wish hideo would spend more time on gameplay instead of wasting who knows how many hours writing banal dialog like this:

the cutscenes are always a joy to look at, but the dialog is unbearable. subtlety is a much better story-telling tool than repetition.

Thanks again for the heads up on this. I just picked it up from the store. I was considering on purchasing MGS1 off of PSN (it's 9.99), but the Essential Collection box set was a sick deal.

I also picked up an S-video cable for my PS3. Man, I never realized how much A/V cables sucked. The S-video looks much clearer/crisper...I can only imagine what these games look like in high-def with an HDMI cable.

I might pick up subsistence -- I just couldn't play the other one I was completely bored -- I really loved the first two games though.

Well I agree in a way and disagree. Sometimes you just have to take something for what it is instead of what you want it to be. Metal Gear Solid is an over the top spy/action type of game, and the dialogue is a part of it. You could wish it was better written, but I could also wish that Mario Galaxy had a better story as well. It's just within the context of the game, and that over the top dialogue in MGS is a staple of the series. I don't even notice it, as I feel the twists and turns in the story more than make up for it. And as you said, the cutscenes are a joy to look at, so I guess I can forgive some things.

Have you played Bioshock? That game has an amazing story telling technique too IMO. Totally different from MGS but equally effective. I think you'd really love that game if you haven't played it already.

No problem man. Glad I could save you some money with the Essentials package. If you haven't played the games yet, you're in for a treat.

And yes, you need to get an HDTV and play with HDMI. While it won't matter much for PS2 games as they are not in HD anyways, but with PS3 games, it's literally like playing 2 different games. Once you go HD, there is no going back.

Well, I've played MGS 1 and 2, but haven't played MGS3 yet. I was already planning on buying MGS3, and I started kicking around the idea of replaying MGS 1 and 2 to refresh myself with the story in anticipation for MGS4 (hence I was considering buying MGS1 off of PSN). I don't know how much MGS3 is priced at in stores, but I would imagine it has to be at least $20, and with MGS1 priced at $9.99, the Essentials collection seemed like a steal (plus you get the Subsistence version of MGS3 - this was big for me).

Also, I told the guy at GameStop that getting a PS3 may have been a bad decision because it is going to make me upgrade to a new television a lot sooner than I wanted to...I guess I'm going to have to put that on my list of first things to buy once I enter the "real world" next year. I could do without HD for television shows, but it seems like having HD for videogames will take them to a whole 'nother level.

This is how things start snowballing: buy PS3 >>> now I want an HD-ready TV >>> I buy HD tv, then develop an unhealthy interest in HD technology and start buying a ton of Blu-Ray movies...
