The Suns have fired coach Scott Skiles after just over two years on the job, and will make the announcement at a 6 p.m. ET press conference, Arizona Republic writer Bob Young said on ESPN Radio today. The Suns, who will host Dallas Mavericks tonight, are one game under.500 mark and are in danger of seeing their 13-year playoff streak come to an end. Neither Suns president Bryan Colangelo nor Skiles could be reached for comment by the Repiublic, but Skiles did not coach the team Saturday and Colangelo said that he was involved in a meeting to deal with a personal issue. Assistant Frank Johnson coached the team in practice, and will take over for the remainder of the season, a club source indicated to the Republic. The source also said a buyout of the remaining 3-plus years on Skiles' contract was being discussed in that Saturday meeting. Skiles, who turns 38 next month, was the youngest coach in the NBA when he took over the Suns in December 1999 after Danny Ainge stepped down 20 games into that season. He came into this season with a 91-53 record, but the Suns have been inconsistent. After a loss in Denver, he asked "am I the problem?"
Good news for everyone else. Skiles was a good coach. His team just wasn't that good. Another reason to hate Colangelo (rules changes) as far as I'm concerned.
True dat. I hate Colangelo! It probably made his own team pretty bad too. I mean I am pretty sure Marbury and Penny are good one on one players that did isos once in a while.
Jerry Colangelo really knows how to set a franchise back- trading Kidd and Robinson. Now firing Skiles - this is really stupid. This owner sucks!!!!!
It wasn't Skiles falt that Phoenix was playing bad. It is just because Marbury isn't that good as Jason Kidd.
They've gone thru 3 coaches in 4 years. This was not a good idea and, if he was really canned for the performance of the team this year, it was way premature. What did they expect would happen when they traded all of Skiles' talent away? He shouldn't have to take the blame for Colangelo's trades.
Good job Penny.....it's nice to know that an average player in the League can drive a head coach out of a job. Can't forget about the other "star".......Marbury. I guess leaving Garnett wasn't the best thing.....huh Steph? And get forget about Phoenix management that decided to trade Jason Kidd.
