"Dream was excellent in that movie "Dead Man Walking"."

"If Dream was a horse, we'd have to shoot him."

I'm all for expressing ones opinion. I really enjoy debating someone who has a differing opinion than I. But, the above posts are not opinions. They are merely juvenile attempts at trying to get attention by belittling Houston's greatest sports hero.

I can argue whether Hakeem can still play. I can debate what is wrong with Olajuwon. But, there's nothing I can say to crap like the examples above.

    I have a dream.........his name's Hakeem.

You might want to ask Clutch, but I think you can probably fit your whole post into your signature file. Then, we'd never forget you don't have a sense of humor when it comes to DREAM.

I have to agree with Dreamer on this one. I think Hakeem has faced an unfortunate string of health issues, but when the guy is on he looks real good. I have been to a few of the games where he was blocking shots and hitting his baseline j (San Antonio game, for one). Is Hakeem somehow keeping us from the playoffs? Is he a bad example for our younger kids (the way he has deferred his role to Francis)? When I read the horse reference, I found that a bit tasteless. I can be as crude as the next guy but, as a longtime Rocket fan, I feel that some things are sacred. His latest problem might be treatable with just an inhaler. You will eat your words, pretend they were never said, or boast that somehow your unkind words inspired him to prove you wrong. Just an observation.

The guy is down and on his last legs, so we are going to make fun of him.(?) You get enjoyment out of watching the city's greatest sports hero decline? This is pathetic.

"Playing for a pay check" my ass. Despite injuries, health and age, Dream is still a formidable center in the NBA, fully capable of 25-30 on some nights. This man is a warrior. Most of the centers in the league couldn't hold Dream's jock strap if he played with George Bush Sr.'s body.

For grins below you can look at Snottie Pimple's numbers...which player would you rather have on your team?

We should learn to appreciate what Hakeem has done for the franchise. We may never get another center of his quality again. Chew on that.

With this new law banning sarcasm and humour on BBS, it looks like this will be my last post. Nah stuff it, I'll take my chances avoiding the Sarcasm Police.

Why not? You've already avoided reality in thinking Mobley shouldn't be traded.

    Doc of Drunk,

What mother would advocate the trading of their son, at least cut him so he can have two incomes and buy me another cadillac.

Look, Hakeem is obviously on the decline. I have no problem whatsoever with anyone stating that or saying he should retire, or whatever. I myself have said that many times. It's just stating the facts. However, I think we need to maintain a level of respect when talking about Hakeem. He has given his all to this franchise for so many years, and his decline has been extremely painful to watch. It doesn't take a genious to figure that out. But let's just keep away from the tasteless jokes. Hakeem deserves better than that.

Sanity and Respect has returned to the BBS.

No one mentioned the articles that stated Hakeem wanted to go back into the game (Rudy wouldn't let him). Does that sound like a man that does not care about winning?

Yes, he is on the decline. However, if anyone look at the stats, all of the season highs for this notorious slow starter ocurred in November and before he even had an opportunity to get into mid season form

    1999-2000 HIGHS
    Points 31 vs. Kings, 11/18/99
Field Goals Made 13 vs. Kings, 11/18/99
Field Goals Attempted 23 vs. Kings, 11/18/99 Offensive Rebounds 5 vs. Spurs, 11/5/99
    Defensive Rebounds 13 @ Kings, 11/21/99
    Assists 7 vs. Bucks, 11/2/99
    Steals 6 vs. Magic, 11/8/99
    Blocks 6 @ Lakers, 11/12/99 1

I can't believe some of the posts i have read bashing the "Dream". He is THE GREATEST HOUSTON ATHLETE to this point in time. Other sports towns treat these athletes with the utmost respect, heck, some of the cities even erect statues outside their arenas. Dream gave us the best years of his life!!!!! We should honor this GREAT athlete and show support. MY GOD, THE ROCKETS ARE THE ONLY HOUSTON SPORTS TEAM TO WIN ANYTHING AND IT NEVER WOULD HAVE HAPPENED WITHOUT DREAM. You all should be ashamed of yourselves, so what if Drean is winding down, respect the MAN for what he has accomplished!!!!!

I agree with you Bobfinn, and with every1 who supports Hakeem. As much as it's been painful to watch him play this season, i just know that when the guy is 100% healthy, or atleast 75%, he can still produce greatly even at this stage of his career. he gave the Houston Rockets the best years of his career. he should be getting more recognition and appreciation for everything's he's done, not taunted and made fun of. hey, maybe you'll all start saying the same crap about Stevie in 15 years or so!!!!

    Dreamer & Cabbage, others offended:

I can say from 1st hand experience that people say extreme things on here. I am a Barkley fan so remember all the negatives people said about him before his injury. I also love Mobleys game and you know all the posts that come up after a bad game for him.

Dream does deserve respect but people post on here just to start conversations, and arguments.

I said immediately after Barkley's injury that we should Cherish the time we have left with Dream, because it could end at any time.

However people should be able to post whatever they feel. I respect him, but don't think I won't criticize him the same way others ripped on Chuck & on Mobley.

I feel so honored that both of my quotes made it in the handle. I call them like I see him and if you don't like it move to China.

Dreamer, you're right. Those aren't opinions they are JOKES. Something to bring the brevity to a crappy season. Why don't you pull the cob out of your ass and see if your mood doesn't improve? If that doesn't help, try a boiling water enema.

I am just glad that Hakeem's condition can be treated with medication. It sucks though that the side effects are fatigue and shortness of breath.

    Gotta say:

Sports stars are just celebrities. Who's going to give me that "Role Model" speech, or that he has done so much for this city we need to give him a crown and a throne. That's fine--he is a superstar, and he makes our memories pleasurable. He deserves to be honored with accolades and treated with respect and cheer when performing.

But if you want to turn them into heros and give them more respect than a fireman deserves, then tell me how they have changed your life. How exactly do they grab you and make a difference? Don't sit there and say because we poke fun at a celebrity, we are jerks. Give me a soliloquoy of why Dream deserves your respect so much.

    Here, let me start:
Dream is an inspiration to anyone committed to turning over a new leaf in life. In his mid to late 20's, the man reflected on his life and found what he thought was an angry, selfish soul. He renewed his faith in God, and ever since has found peace in himself through that faith.

But, off the court, Dream will never stand-up to the respect I give Barkley. And I probably make wise-cracks about Barkley as much as any player (except Ralph Sampson).

Here's how I feel about Barkley:

from the thread on Lost Respect for Drexler. http://bbs.clutchcity.net/ubb/Forum3/HTML/005484.html
But, I'm not going to call people jerks for poking fun at my hero. And certainly not call them "pathetic"...or tell them to "grow up".

Alright, that's my heartfelt post for the month.

    peace biscuit

Hey RocketFreak, jokes are cool man.

Humor aside, my response was to those who have the opinion that Dream is washed up. I know, opinions are just that. Opinions also encourage opinions from the opposite point of view as well.

As the AntiBarkley, I could make light of CB's injuries the past couple of seasons, even his career-ending injury last year. However, Barkley has earned my respect personally because of his contributions to the team. Despite my problems with him as a person, he came to play when he played, sometimes even in pain. Like Dream, he too is a warrior in my book.

As with Dream, injuries and age are becoming a problem for him. Has anyone made light of that?

I as much as anyone loves Olajuwon. I've watched him since his Phi Slama Jama days. And, as much as I'd like to see him go out gracefully, that $16 million he's making sure would look nice as cap dollars.

Let's face it. The business of professional basketball is winning. To win, you must have players that not only play on a high level, but do so consistently. You must also have players capable of playing the vast majority of the 82 games in a season.

Olajuwon has been inconsistent at best this season and last. If that is because of his health, well that is part of the game too. I would never think to belittle the guy because of all he has meant to the team and the city, but his reign as best center in the NBA is over. He has admitted that he is retiring after next season. The team is filled with young guys who love to run.

As much as we'd all love for Dream to be "the man", he cannot be anymore and the team has outgrown him. I wish him all the best over the next season and 1/3, but, at this point, I don't feel uncomfortable saying that having $16 million (well, maybe only $9 million since he would still have a year left on his contract) to lure free agents like Tim Duncan and Grant Hill would not upset me in the least.
