I seen alot of people had steve nash on there list and not deron in the Who is your top ten players right now thread.... So i got to wondering...... We all know Chris Paul is leading the PG race....By alot So who is second........ I mean right now...... Not last year,, Not who has had the best career At this moment who is the second best NBA Point Guard?
This one is easy. For years, we were asking who was the best point guard out of Nash and Kidd. For years, we will be asking who is the best point guard out of Paul and Williams.
No we weren't. When Kidd was the indisputed best, Nash was just another All-Star pg in Dallas. When Nash was winning MVP's with Phoenix, it wasn't even a question whether or not he was better than Kidd.
I'm a Billups believer. Nash - old, declining faster than his new Center Kidd - can't hit a shot and is getting abused by younger guards these days Williams - great young guard but still needs some seasoning Billups is big, strong, clutch as hell, durable (except for last night) and has the type of game that will allow him to play at a high level into his mid or even late 30s. He has all the intangibles the other guys don't have and his tangibles are pretty damn good too.
I'm not calling you an idiot, but that in and of itself is an idiotic statement. One could argue that Nash had a better season this year than he did his first MVP season. At the very least, they are practically identical. That really was just a flat out false statement that you made.
the presumption of this poll is not set in stone. many think cp is the best pg right now; but it's not universal consensus. many notions i can't agree with. e.g., nash "one of the all time greats"?
I rather have Nash on the Rox, but DWill is beastly. Just gonna hope that CP3 will always be better than him, will have to see the Jazz boast about having the best PG.
Even with CP3 dismantling the Mavs and the continuous love .. I think CP3 vs Deron Williams is still a toss-up. As for Chauncey Billups ... I think he's seriously overrated. Aside from the great Finals performance he's been solid but nothing to write home about. This is a supposedly bigger, stronger, durable PG yet he averages under 3 rebounds for his career. I know pg's aren't supposed to have high rebound numbers but that's just pathetic for a PG his size especially if were comparing him to the other elite PG's in the game ....there's nothing he does better than them.
Parker? His scoring is great because the shots he gets off are high % shots. He can break down the interior defense with his penetration which sometimes put those big men on the other team into foul trouble. But he's better as a scorer and not a distributor and, in my world, you gotta do both. Nash and Calderon? His playmaking skills are phenomenal. He can hit the open shots when he needs to and he runs the pick and roll just as good as anyone on the planet. But that back and that matador defense makes me look the other way. Calderon? I consider him a poor man's Nash. He does the same things well--playmaking, shooting at a high clip from anywhere. But that defense is suspect and his size isn't the best. Baron and Gilbert? This is where you get into that realm where these guys are just playing this position because they hold an advantage over other PGs that lets them score at will. Baron's stronger than most guards; Gilbert's quick and plays with a shooting guard mentality....but that's the thing--if I were to build a team, I'd want everything out of my players, point guards included. Other PGs in this discussion have better assist:TO ratios and that's crucial. Andre Miller and Jason Kidd? I put these two together because they are similar in one way: these guys can't shoot. Whether it be having a mid-range game like Nash/Parker, or a long range game like Calderon/Arenas...these guys have neither. Sure, if you have stud players at the other 4 positions then either one is fine, but don't expect them to bail you out with any heroics from beyond 10 ft. Chauncey Billups? Great assist:TO ratio; has that clutch thing down pat. Plays steady defense and is pretty much automatic at the FT line. But the two things that bother me about Billups. One, his shooting is awful from 22 ft in. Two, where's the passion man? Yes, I'm going to knock him on that because how are you going to get excited for your star player if he's going to show nothing in return? That leaves..... Deron Williams. He can hit from outside, can hit the mid-range. Dude can drive down the lane and dunk. (50%FG, 395% 3ptFG, 80%FT) Handle the ball pretty well. His assist:TO ratio isn't as great as Paul's or Billups' but it's still a respectable 3:1. His defense isn't as bad as Nash/Calderon. And to cap it all off, he is capable of running an offense. He might not be great at one thing, but he's good to very good at everything.
Don't downplay Nash's value when he was in Dallas. He was just another allstar because Dirk was there to take away the spotlight. Kidd was inserted in New Jersey, and he put the a lifeless franchise on his back and took them to the Finals two straight years. The reason Nash looks better in PHX: he can afford more rest with Barbosa backing him up. Kidd could never take a rest his whole tenure in New Jersey. He never had a good backup point guard. everytime he went out, so did the Nets only offense. Either way you look at it, both racked up assists, both made their teams better, both had great vision, and both were a blur. The question was if you preferred a shooter or a rebounder and post presence in addition to their skillset. If Nash won the MVP in Phoenix, Kidd should have won the MVP in New Jersey. Deron Williams vs. Chris Paul is just like Jason Kidd vs. Steve Nash. Except they are playing this way just 3 years into their careers.
