    So if I were to go to the store right now the only option I would have is purchasing a 40GB? Sorry for the stupid questions but I never thought I would be in the market for a PS3 until I played Rock Band. That game is a party waiting to happen.

    Pretty much, unless you can find a store that still has 80GB PS3s...or if you're really lucky, maybe even 60GB PS3s.

    Sony is sort of bringing back the 80GB PS3 with the release of Metal Gear Solid 4 on June 12th in the form of a bundle (MGS4 + 80GB PS3 for $499). You could wait until then to get a 80GB PS3, regardless of whether you even want MGS4. They might even start restocking 80GB systems soon, although I'm guessing most/all of them are being put to use for the MGS4 bundle (why wouldn't people just buy the bundle since it comes with a free game?).

    And given how complicated these SKUs are, these aren't really stupid questions.

    so after the MGS4 bundle, is it going back to just 40gig versions forever? or is there going to be another BC PS3 in the future?

    Don't know. I thought they were discontinuing the 80GB SKU, but they might still keep it around. Maybe the MGS4 bundle will just replace the MotorStorm bundle.

    I remember Sony talking about how they might start taking custom orders for PS3's. I think the time is now. Let customers choose what they want and how they want it. Charge extra for pure backwards compatibility. Let them choose XMB or Linux as the default OS. 20GB-160GB, let em choose. Even color. Seems like a lot of people are ready to jump into the PS3 game but are intimidated by the array of SKUs many of which aren't even available.

    I think that was partly Ken Kutaragi's vision for the PS3, and he's gone (actually got hired by a different company today I believe). I miss Ken...and Phil. :(

    If they could just get software emulation working, at least at a decent rate with the promise of improved compatibility in the future, then things would be a bit simpler. We'd still have SKUs with different HDDs (and possibly some with a bundled game), but as long as that is pretty much the only difference, it shouldn't be too confusing.

    And BTW, if they did do something like that, keep in mind that prices would go up quite a bit. They might as well sell them for a profit at that point.
