HOUSTON -- Steve Francis isn't shortening his return home.

The Rockets' veteran point guard agreed to return to the team on Wednesday, picking up the player option on the final year of his contract.

Francis' plans to return to the Rockets bolsters the team's backcourt heading into next season, giving the team four point guards under contract. The former All-Star can also play the off-guard spot.

Francis had his season with the Rockets cut short after undergoing knee surgery in February to repair a torn quadriceps tendon. The team is optimistic that he'll be able to return in time for training camp.

Before the 2007-08 season, the guard signed with the Rockets as a free agent in hopes of returning to his All-Star-caliber form in the city where he began his career. Francis played five seasons in Houston before the Rockets traded him to Orlando in 2003.

Unfortunately, injuries spoiled his homecoming. Francis appeared in 10 games, averaging 5.5 points and 3.0 assists before being sidelined by the knee injury.

this is just one pretty big injury he had the past yearS. he is not injury prone, injury prone are players like tracy and yao, where they get injured in different body parts, or players that keep injuring the same body part.

Tmac and Yao are the injury prone Rockets, as far as I know, Francis was playing hurt in his days in NY and did not want to have surgery, until now. If anything he can come back strong again. Wish him a well recovery just like any of our Rockets. (Tmac, Yao, Battier, Alston)

Injury prone is more like T-Mac's back spasms a year ago.
Yao's leg/ankle/foot problems. Even though some of those were not his fault.

    Well, good news is.
Yao is having surgery, which will hopefully maintain his health next season.
T-Mac is repaired his knee and shoulder, so he'll be fine, also his back spams haven't been a problem so far.

I think we'll have a very healthy team next season. :)

Actually, this injury has bothered him for the past two or three years, but this was the first time it kept him out this long. Either way, I agree that generally, he hasn't been all that injury prone. Hopefully he can get in good form this season.

I also don't really think Yao is that injury prone... he may be overworked, but all his injuries have been unrelated, and seemingly fluke accident after fluke accident (and he was free of such accidents for his first three years in the league). I'm still not convinced that he hasn't just been very unlucky so far.

i think he played better than i expected when he was healthy early in the season. he still had lots of athleticism and he seemed far away from being done. if he can get healthy again he's a good option as a combo guard off the bench (luther's role).

At least, Francis won't be worse than Head in playoffs.

This is great news guys! I hope he re-dedicates himself and rehabs the proper way to come back healthy.

Watching him in the back court with T-mac kind of gave me a slight chub.

you could be right about yao, but the injury stevie had, he never fixed it, this is the first time he fixed it, cause it was affecting him too much. that's why you cant' call him injury prone, because he didn't fix it and reinjure it.

With all this injury talk and such. I can't help but bring up Baron Davis as a prime example to Steve Francis.

About 3 years ago everyone said Baron Davis was done. They said he was injury prone, had serious surgeries and was washed up. Granted Baron Davis is 2 years younger than Francis...Baron is still playing at the top of his game and he had arguably his best statistical season this past year putting up like 22 ppg 7 assists 4 rebs and 2 steals.

Now, I am not saying Francis can come back to a level like Baron Davis or anywhere close to him but if he can comeback and be injury free I can't help but see him as a positive fit for this team with his penetration, rebounding, creating his own shot, creating looks for others, desire and added depth towards the PG position.

IMHO if we roll with Alston as our starting PG next year im cool with that but if we have Brooks as our main backup I am not comfortable with that. He should be our 3rd string pg at least for another year. Package Luther Head and let those minutes go to Francis.

Yes one thing you can't complain is stevie always came out playing 100% attacking the basket and working well with yao....I think without trades we are a very very solid team with the current roster...I do want to get one more center/pf so a guy at least 6'10 an eric dampier quality player...big man, rebounds, d, and can make easy baskets.

Look, I want to be excited as much as the next guy, but Steve didn't even travel with the team in the playoffs.

Reports were that he was in Vegas living it up......if the guy is committed...then great, but if not then he is just taking up roster space.

Francis led the team in assists that game. It was the only game he was a team leader in assists, scoring or rebounding. He also led them that day, in heart...

Rockets through the season showed they had plenty of heart though...Francis gave them an early emotional lift but now its about his actual skills benefiting the team. Hope he has a healthy recovery
