I agree with you. I read a statistic (can't find it now) that Whites on welfare out-number blacks on welfare 5-to-1. Despite that, some black leaders have successfully tied that issue to race.

Why does the thread starter automatically assume that there is some racist element behind there being no black GOP Congressional members? That is insulting to many.

I don't think that's what the poster meant. I think he meant the Democrats have tried to convince blacks that even if they don't benefit from these programs that their fellow blacks will and that it's in the best interests of blacks to vote in the interests of their race to strengthen their influence on the democratic process.

Whether or not that's true is certainly debatable but I believe that's what he meant to say.

No one is forcing a quota. There are elected Black Democratic Congressmen, so the accusation of no merit is absurd.

    What's the real deal?

If blacks are about 13% of the population and less than 10% of blacks call themselves republican (according to wikipedia), then only about 1% of the population is black republican. So, if we expect the reps to reflect the consituency, I think it does (within a margin of error).

You are a charter and only make yourself look guilty. I see why the poster on this site put you to shame in every single thread that you post. I never once implied anything about race in my opening statement about race as a matter of fact the paragraph was written by a white journalist not me. I bet you little hateful blood started boiling when I asked this question. Trader you should be ashamed of yourself for trying to suppress the issue. Then running to the mods, as usual, to try to get the thread locked.

Saying it twice still doesn't make it make sense. Third time's a charm?

Agreed... I think the only group that is over-reflected, would be my own, Jews. In fact, we've had members of congress since 1844.

I think you have that backwards, it's white Republican politicians that have successfully tied welfare to blacks in their southern strategy. Poor white people all too often vote their hatreds (gays, blacks, and now muslims) rather than their pockets and that's why Republicans win the southern vote.

I am trying to figure out what to make of this
Perceived interests = Interest espoused by liberal leaders
Do you think Black People are not bright enough to know their own interest?
That they are only able to accept and parrot those things Espoused by liberal leaders?

What is insulting is that you say Congressional office should be based on merit and then claim that there isn't a racist element to their being no black GOP members. Which is it buddy?

Actually there is one group vastly more over-represented
    RICH FOLX!!

I suspect the Top 10% is very well represented in Congress
far more than the other 90%

Poor whites generally vote for Democrats, and pretty heavily so.

I'll have to see those numbers. If that's the case Republicans wouldn't win the south every election year.

I think most voters in general, (white black hispanic asian gay women) are not bright enough to know their own interest. I'm not advocating either party here (I'm independent), but my opinion of the GENERAL voting public is pretty low with regards to their knowledge of government.
