Anyone get the tribute on the 610 post game show recorded by any chance? Listening to some of those clips made my eyes water a little. It just isn't going to be the same anymore...
Someone needs to put this on a Rockets highlights mix... with "rare" shots of Gene and Jim... <object width="425" height="355"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/8b3mftcV0dY&hl=en"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/8b3mftcV0dY&hl=en" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="355"></embed></object>
will miss you guys....met Gene before game 2....nice guy..great voice..both of you... you will be missed...
I watched the game while listening to them. I wish he would have left with 'How sweet it's been!' or something along those lines but the way he did was very good. 'So long.Until we meet again'. Do you think it's possible that for a game or two or three next year, that they would let them call a game again?
I spent a year working in the Rockets organization. It was a dream job. I grew up a Rockets fan. One of my fondest memories was shooting and editing a piece about Gene and Jim that some of you may have seen run at halftime. This was the year before Yao and the year after Dream... so there wasn't much to highlight at the time. I didn't get to talk with Gene much (during my year with the Rockets) but Jim is the real deal. What you see (or hear) is what you get. He's a true gentleman and one of the most genuine people you will ever meet. One of my favorite memories was sitting in the media area under the Compaq Center before a Celtic game and listening to Jim and Tommy Heinsohn talk basketball. You never knew when one of them could drop a Havlicek or Oscar story. Gene and Jim got me enthused about basketball as a kid. Gene made you love the Rockets with his enthusiasm. Jim gave us all perspective. He taught us the history. He brought the legends of the past to those of us who were just learning about the NBA. They were fans of the Rockets and cared like we cared without being shills (see Milo). The Sampson shot was the best example. It's like they let us on the radio. Players come and go. Uniforms come and go. Even stadiums come and go. Gene and Jim are really the tie that binds us to all the great Rockets over the years and all the great memories. I'm 36 and I don't know what it's like if Gene and Jim aren't telling me about the Rockets. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! You made the last 33 years more enjoyable and gave us a million incredible memories. You made a city fall in love with the Rockets. You will be missed more than you will ever know.
I recorded this entire game and the postgame. I figure no one's all that interested in the game (I can post it if you want it), so I chopped-up the postgame and the tribute. Post-game Tribute Here's the tribute from the postgame show. I added Gene's final signoff at the very beginning. <div> <object classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" codebase="http://fpdownload.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=6,0,0,0" width="210" height="25" id="mp3playerlightsmallv3" align="middle"> <param name="allowScriptAccess" value="sameDomain" /> <param name="movie" value="http://www.podbean.com/podcast-audio-video-blog-player/mp3playerlightsmallv3.swf?audioPath=http://rocketvengeance.podbean.com/medias/play/aHR0cDovL21lZGlhMi5wb2RiZWFuLmNvbS82MTAwOC91L1RyaWJ1dGVfd2l0aFNpZ25vZmYubXAz/Tribute_withSignoff.mp3&autoStart=no" /> <param name="quality" value="high" /><param name="bgcolor" value="#ffffff" /><param name="wmode" value="transparent" /> <embed src="http://www.podbean.com/podcast-audio-video-blog-player/mp3playerlightsmallv3.swf?audioPath=http://rocketvengeance.podbean.com/medias/play/aHR0cDovL21lZGlhMi5wb2RiZWFuLmNvbS82MTAwOC91L1RyaWJ1dGVfd2l0aFNpZ25vZmYubXAz/Tribute_withSignoff.mp3&autoStart=no" quality="high" width="210" height="25" name="mp3playerlightsmallv3" align="middle" allowScriptAccess="sameDomain" wmode="transparent" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" pluginspage="http://www.macromedia.com/go/getflashplayer" /></embed> </object> <br /><a style="font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 11px; font-weight: normal; padding-left: 41px; color: #2DA274; text-decoration: none; border-bottom: none;" href="http://www.podbean.com">Powered by Podbean.com</a> </div> Download the Zipped MP3 of the Gene and Jim tribute Rockets Post-game Show And here's the entire postgame show. The NBA.com feed cut out (it always sort of randomly stops during the postgame), so I picked it back up off of SR610. Ever since I became a Rockets fan in 93, I've been listening to them, and it won't be the same without the two of them on the broadcast. One of my favorite memories of listening to them is from when I went to college in San Antonio (1998-2001). I would scour the internet looking for links to the game, but streaming wasn't what it is now, and it was pretty impossible to find anything. Somehow, I discovered that there was a hill where I could park the car, and get a fuzzy (but listenable) signal of a Houston station carrying the games (I don't remember who carried them back then . . . was it 740?). Every so often, I'd drive up there, turn the radio on, and listen to the Rockets. Listening to Gene + Jim call the games is something I'll never forget. ---- Oh, and one other thing -- I've been recording the audio from games since early March. I have almost all of every game since then. If there is interest, I'll post them. I don't have time to cut out the commercials, or clean them up, but if you want them, I'll upload them and post them here.
Thanks for everything guys - especially for your vivid broadcasts on the radio while I was growing up without cable.
I got Jean Peterson autograph and talked to him at game 5. I told him it would not be the same without him and Jim. Sometime I jut turn down the TV volume just to listen to a dynamic duo talk. He was happy to hear that.
I am 41 and listened to the game from Almaty, Kazakhstan. I have loved the Rockets and Gene and Jim since I was kid growing up in Houston. They simply are the best, great announcers and people and the one constant with the Rockets all these years. I cannot imagine the Rockets without them.
Thats awesome. From Houston to China to Kazakhstan, the Rockets are definitely world wide. Very niiiice!
Did anyone notice once Jim took his leave of absence 'The Streakers' were never the same! Thanks for the memories, Deke will do just fine next year filling in, dont worry!
as a rockets fan since i was a young kiddo all i know is gene and jim. Being in my late 20's now i feel like with them retiring, they are taking a piece of my childhood with them. i wish they could stay on forever, but all good things must come to an end. Best of luck Gene and Jim we will all miss you
I haven't had a chance to edit this, but while this thread is here the most people will see it. Here is a link to MP3s of Gene and Jim calling the Bobcats game during the streak. (03-14-08)
HOW SWEET IT IS!! i loved how bill worrell thanked both of them for their careers i just hope that when we win next year...they'll be there...
thanks a bunch for posting this...it's amazing how these two guys had the power to make a city love this game so much...
i met gene at the kingwood country club once. my friend's dad introduced us. to hear that voice talking to you in real life is still one of the coolest moments in my life. it was surreal. they were the best and will be missed. i remember listening to that "jazz didn't start the clock" game. i was laughing as i listened to it again. best of luck to the both of you.
