Ok, not big money. It's $5.85/hr, or course credit.

Some out there with a statistical bent might find this interesting, though:

This internship will be paid at $5.85/hr or can be applied for Course Credit only.

Candidates interested in the Basketball Operations Intern position (and those of you who just can’t resist showing off your problem-solving skills) should enter by responding to the following question. Winners of the contest will receive an internship with the Houston Rockets as early as summer 2008!

    PROBLEM:
Develop a model that best predicts an NBA player’s three point percentage for all players who shot 100 or more 3s in any season from 2000-01 to 2007-08. Briefly discuss your data set, approach, and results. Using the model you developed, predict the NBA’s highest three point percentage shooters (in order) for the 2008-09 regular season. Predictive accuracy will be judged using our own internal methods. Accordingly, contestants should build a model that will most accurately predict future data, not just one that best fits past data.

    RULES:
Attach all relevant data sets utilized in your model (any file format you like). Detail the results of your model, including the working prediction file with dependent and independent variables used, and your 2008-09 predictions. Feel free to add a brief summary of your results in a Microsoft Word document.

    QUESTIONS:
Individual questions (if any) should be addressed to xprizequestions@rocketball.com. Unfortunately, we cannot guarantee a response due to the number of questions. Contestants should be prepared to move forward with their analysis using their best judgment.

    DEADLINE:
E-mail your submission for the X-Prize Internship Contest to xprize@rocketball.com by midnight June 1, 2008. Finalists will be contacted in mid June.

Sounds like something I would do...if were still in school or just didn't need to survive.

    Question...

What if someone responds to the posting with their method for predicting the top 3 point shooters for 2008-2009, they don't get the internship, but then a year from now it turns out that they were right?

    That would be lame.

    Haha.

On the contrary, I almost fainted when I saw that 5.85/hour crap. I'm from California so I guess it's all related to living cost/expense. So...houses in Texas are free then I suppose? Haha.

Yeah a student who doesn't really need money could probably take that job. Um, gas prices are kind of high though.

As an econ major in my senior year, this is right up my alley. I'll definitely be submitting a statistical model, although it probably won't be the most sophisticated they'll get. Hopefully, if I get it, the parents won't mind helping me out with the money situation.

why is it that pro teams pay their players/coaches millions (over pay) and they treat employees like dirt (paywise)...I have heard this from all sports (football, basketball, etc)....
i guess they can get away with it so they do it....
people liek to work for them eventhough they don't pay $@#@.....

um...most internships don't pay anything. I interned at Ch 13 for free. Most of the people I know in the TV business that started off as interns were not paid.

Did it count for credits, and was it 35-40 hours a week? I couldn't imagine interning full time for absolutely nothing but the experience. Yes, I realize experience can be invaluable, but if you don't end up working in that field, you essentially did your time for nothing.

I have a killer Tit-for-Tat model that I am submitting. It's completely irrelevant to basketball, but cool nevertheless...

I was an Web Intern for Rockets.com and it was course credit. The guy I worked with was getting paid minimum wage and he was married and already a graduate. (I guess he realllly wanted to work for the Rockets)

BTW, I know Jonathan in Basketball Operations so whoever wins is gonna acquire a cool co-worker! :) He says he sees the players all the times because their offices are right next to the locker room and the coach's office. NICE!

If I actually wanted to do video things for a living, I would do this.

Even badly paid intern experience is good for the resume if you want to work in that field.

I could easily do the job, I currently do tons of data entry and video, but they cant afford me.

to anyone with the Rockets, feel free to offer me a full time gig tho, Im well paid right now, but Im not stupid. :D

I would try this. But the Stat courses I took in college were very hard because of the teacher. Actually, that was the class I hate the most looking back at my college career. stupid DISC3331

I'd do this if I had time. There are basic regressions that you could do based on how well one year's % predicts the next year's. But that kind of simple model would almost certainly just predict that this year's top shooters will be next year's top shooters. Seems like you need to factor in other variables as well, like age, # of 3-pt shots taken, and perhaps personnel changes, though that's more complicated.

Some of the effects are also likely going to be non-linear (e.g. players will shoot best if they shoot a medium # of 3pters, rather than if they only jack up desperation 3's or shoot way too many bad 3's). So I would guess a data-mining/machine-learning approach is better than a simple linear regression. Nerdy fun!

it may just be one of those obvious things in that 35-40 hours seems like a weekly amount, but as posted above it sounds as if the total internship is 35-40 hours, not weekly. Which could make sense...

Even if it was full time, if your goal is to work in the sports business and you're still in college, this sounds like a great start.

What if you just submit the "Random Walk Model," and state that this year's top shooters will be next year's top shooters.. Add a little more analysis for those players you think are on the rise and BAM!

    You'll have a model in 5 minutes.

    Worth a try.
