I totally agree with Mike on this. pack of softies. http://www.ajc.com/hawks/content/sports/hawks/stories/2008/04/22/hawksnot_0423.html Mike Bibby may have lit a fire under the Celtics after calling Boston fans 'bandwagon jumpers', according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. "They were kind of loud at the beginning," Bibby said. "But a lot of these fans are bandwagon jumpers trying to get on this now. I played here last year, too. And I didn't see three fourths of them. They're for the team now and they might get a little rowdy but that's about it." When asked whether he felt the Celtics had fair-weather fans, who joined the party after adding Ray Allen and Kevin Garnett, Bibby added, "You could say that. I remember them having bags on their heads [last year]. It's a different look. I guess that's what happens when you win."
hey he isnt lying most of them ar bandwagon jumpers just like some of the people that attended rox game during the streak
Yup pretty much, both cities fans majority suck. I remember watching TV games of Houston vs. Boston when Boston was terrible and their stands were empty like Bobcats or something, lol.
What a ridiculous argument. How many Hawk fans are coming out of the woodwork now that Atlanta are a playoff team? I'm sure they've all been there through the last 7 years since their last playoff appearance screaming their heads off at every game. When was the last time the Celtics were this good? Wasn't Larry Bird in uniform? It's almost as if excitement generated by the team is directly related to how good the team is. Does Bibby seriously have to go after the Boston fans because he knows his team is severely overmatched? Did someone from the crowd say something mean to him during a game and hurt his feelings? Oh, wah wah wah. Grow a pair Mike.
The whole "bandwagon" idea simply eludes me; of course fans are more excited and involved when their team is winning! Duh! Isn't that what a "fan" is? Listen, I promise you, many of those die hard Celtic fans having been sitting there since Bird walked off the court for the last time. They have suffered through many years of frustration, kind of like Rocket's fans. I have nothing bad to say about them. I would tell them, enjoy!
amen. there isn't a team in all of sports that gets the same support when it's losing that it gets when it's winning.
Every city has bandwagon fans in one form or fashion. The only exception in recent years might be Chicago. They were still selling out UC long after Jordan's Bulls were relegated to the archives of basketball history. Cubs same way, even though they've been losing for a century, and they have two teams in town. It's the only major sports town I have respect for, Philly is a distant second.
people don't show up ONLY to see the cubs. they show up because of wrigley...because of wrigleyville...because the park and the area are an attracton in and of themselves. they're exhibit "a" as to why other teams started building more aesthetically pleasing ballparks in downtown areas. because even when the astros suck, an evening at MMP is still attractive. i think that's the number one reason baseball attendance has been so great over the past 5 years or so.
So what? Most fans of teams that suddenly get good are "bandwagoners." But a team's fan-base has to start somewhere. Maybe in time a lot of them will become diehards willing to suffer through lottery seasons, as I do.
Maybe Bibby is thinking of the fans in Sacramento, who are some of the best in the NBA. By comparison in Boston, the Celtics are normally just a blip on the screen compared to the Red Sox and Pats. He would have been smarter to say this after game 2.
I watched nearly every Hawks game and I can tell you it doesn't matter if the Celtics or Lakers were in town versus the T-Wolves or the Grizzles. Hawks fans still don't show up and even when they do the place is like a library.
that's so true hell I remember when the Hawks top contenders back in the 90s they still had emtpy seats at the Omni, I've never understood how Atlanta has held on to an NBA team all this time to be honest.
A lot of our fans here in Houston are the same way. It was louder during the 22 game winning streak than in the playoffs IMO. Now where did all those people go when the streak ended?
Bibby is 100% correct, but why does he care? He should be more worried about winning at least one play-off game rather than pointing out the flaws in the Boston fans.
