if I understand you correctly, you are describing a trap, which essentially is your Scenario #2 picture, but you didn't describe it that way. Since the Bulls beat Sloan doing this, he's not new to it. The trap is now one of the NBA's premier ways to defend a PnR. I agree. You should defnitely mix in a trap, far superior to a switch or zone, imo. But it's not new. Sloan has a response. The weak side will go into motion. Boozer releases on the trap. Our PF tries to follow him. If he's quick to follow Boozer, Boozer can reset the pick for Deron, and we are back to square one with a PnR. If he ignores the release, then our help defense must start moving, and so will Sloan's offense. Sometimes Boozer completely clears out to the weakside and a secondary picker (Okur) comes from the top to get Deron back into your Scenario #1. Sometimes Boozer provides a pick for a cutter, etc. But you're right. The trap is the best way to get the ball out of Deron's hands. But it sets everything else about Sloan's offense into motion, because help defense must respond to Boozer releasing to the basket.
He will burn them if they try that.........Hes no pushover......But we do need something to slow him down.........Hes their soul.......Take that out they have nothing.........But picking up at full court wil just make our pgs tired..........They cant stay with him........they need to just wait for the help when he overpowers them
btw: when Yao is playing, Adelman's primary response to trapping the Tmac/Yao pnr is for Yao to dive to the basket. He's secondary response is to pass it weakside and get Yao over there for an entry, since Yao's man is now chasing him. Utah does that with Boozer, too.
They just have to try something different tonight. Their pick 'n rolls resulted in a layup drill on Saturday. At the very least, make the Jazz use more of the shot clock executing their offense and maybe force a rushed shot here and there. It can't really get worse than the other night no matter what they try lol.
If they guard it like you want then the Utah 2 can back pick the Rockets 5. The Jazz 5 (Okur) can then go to the basket for a dunk, or the corner for a 3.
Well in that case...........Would u rather Deron and Boozer kill us or put it in the hands of Okur............. Hes just suggesting something..........Because apperently what was played last night didnt work
I don't think a back pick from their 2 on our 5 is really practical in that set, but I understand your point that the other players can still get themselves open regardless of how we guard the pick 'n roll. The point is to minimize the efficiency of the pick 'n roll, which includes making it harder for Williams to complete passes to the other players, even if they're open. I realize this is the NBA and you're not going to completely nullify the other team's offense, unless they are simply bricking open jumpers (which the Rockets tend to do). But after a game like the other night, you've got to try something.
ClutchCityReturns is describing a way to take the ball out of Deron's hands pretty much identical to how teams take the ball out of TMac's hands on the TMac/Yao PnR.
I kept forgetting to stay conscious of when they were running this play, but from what I did see, when they ran it the Rockets did have more success pushing Williams baseline. It's just so damn hard to do because he changes directions so quickly.
