I was troubled by their description of how researchers try to prove that violent games lead to violent behavior. They just haves some college kids play a violent game, then take them to another room and tell them to push a button which shocks or in some cases blows a loud horn to inflict pain on another student. Sounds a lot like that study from the early 60's at Yale were they found that people blindly obey orders to inflict pain on others.

At work so I can't watch the video. But I'm calling BS on anything that says videogames promote violence. That's the parents' fault for not letting their child know better. As for a college kid....c'mon, I play Halo all the time, you don't see me walking around with a shotgun and sniper rifle trying to get a killtacular.

I think if you combine a kid who has tendencies towards violence + violent video games + parents who dont care, you might end up with a psycho killer. or you might not. but you definitely cant put all the blame on video games.

If you combine anyone stupid with pretty much anything, you will probably get a negative result.

Stupid person + Guns, Games, Vehicles, Alcohol, Knives, Plastic Bags, Pencils etc. = :(

You put me in a room with the ability to shock innocent unsuspecting victims? Hell ya I am gonna shock em. Video games has nothing to do with it.

You have time to read though, click the link to the books homepage. They are definately not saying that violent games lead to violent kids. Infact, one of their findings was that boys who don't play games at all are highly likely to be violent or have problems. An example was the VaTech shooter. In the official report, the only mentions of videogames was that he played Sonic as a little kid and that his college roommates thought it was weird that he didn't play any games at all.

EDIT: I meant to say "IF you have time to read"

Imagine if I had to console
the families of those slain I slayed on game consoles
I aim, I hold, right trigger to squeeze
Press up and Y, one less n**** breathe
B for the bombs, press pause for your moms
Make the room silent, she don't approve of violent
games - she leaves, resume activity
Start in blue heart, subpar sharp wizardry
On next part I, insert code
to sweeten up the little person's murder workload
I tell him he work fo', CIA with A
A operative, I operate this game all day
I hold the controller connected to the soldier
with weapons on his shoulder, he's only seconds older
than me - We, playful but serious
Now keep that online for online experience

    interesting.

the "no video games" = violent behavior thing seems perfectly in line

a kid who doesnt play video games is like one in a million.. probably doesnt have anything in common with other kids... a tortured soul.. eventually lashes out... like at VT...

and the part about the Wii being great for kids, i totally agree

i bought one and couldn't wait to show my parents, who NEVER played video games with me when I was a kid.

i showed them it, and they fell in love, we had a ton of fun playing, my entire family...

he's referring to the studies conducted by stanley milgram at yale in which a subject would shock a person who failed to learn a task. the op knows what he's talking about, although i don't understand why s/he doesn't like the way that they tested their hypothesis. sure, shocking or blowing a horn at a student is not representative of real-world aggressive behavior, but it still suggests that children may be more aggressive as a result of playing video games.

p.s. to add to the previous post since i can't edit it, the subjects shocked the learners because a lab technician told them to.

i think the argument may be more subtle than that. gta may not make you want to kill people, but it may make you more aggressive. and you may not even be aware that you're acting more aggressively (the reason why self-reported data in psychology is treated with a lot of skepticism). now i'm not sure how much i agree with the studies, but you shouldn't dismiss them so readily either.
