Ok, got it downloaded and installed last night. While it's a vast improvement over the old interface, it's still dreadfully slow. I can understand that given that they probably had an awful lot of traffic last night, so in a week or so maybe it will settle down. Now it's definitely an improvement, but that is not necessarily saying much. On a scale of 1 to 10, it's gone from about a 1 up to maybe a 3 or 4 now. XBL is still way out in front in the online interface game. One of the reasons XBL is so much better is because it's much smoother and faster. And that makes me wonder about something: how could XBL's interface bring up content options so much faster than Sony's? Even given the likely amount of traffic on Sony's server(s), it still causes me some concern, as, while I am giving them the benefit of the doubt because of people downloading the new interface, maybe that's NOT the case, because it seemed to be pretty much exactly the same speed as the old interface, just in a new shell. The question is, is Microsoft's XBL so much faster bringing up new content item menus because it's just a faster communication between my system and their servers? Or does it do something else, such as pre-cache all of that in the background from the moment it's turned on? I suspect the latter, but I don't know for sure either way - bigger brains than mine would have to answer that. However, it then causes me to ask the question: Is there some kind of option to turn on that same kind of pre-caching on the PS3? It seems pretty clear that the system would be capable of doing it, what with that constant data scroll up top, as well as the ability to do that 'Folding @ Home' thing, which works even if you shut down. I would assume that if the PS3 started gathering content data as soon as it is turned on, then whenever you get around to opening up the store to see if there are any new demos or anything, it should all already be there, instead of having to wait through slug-like menus and content to load. Any thoughts?
I only tried it for a few minutes the other night. I liked the new interface better than the old one, although it seemed to have trouble loading the pics. I only had the names of the files available for downloading. Of course the standout feature of the 2.30 update is the DTS-HD MA decoding which works great. There's still an issue with some 7.1 titles(mainly New Line's), but that can be ironed out in a future update.
I haven't had a chance to really check out the store that much. I just checked it out once, and it was pretty slow. The preview video of the store seemed a lot quicker, so I am guessing that most of the slowness was because of initial launch issues There was still a delay in the preview video though, which might not be ideal. I can't recall if the new store does this, but I think I read that it stores content on the HDD as you're navigating the store. If that is the case, I don't see why they couldn't at least store general content on the HDD at all times (would still have some issues at times though I guess). I'm sure if enough people complain about it, they'll work on improving it.
GT5P is out...and omg it's great!! I played online races for two hours straight and now I'm going to be tired at work tomorrow
GT has got to be one of the greatest series of all time. The way they polish those games is insane. They treat it like their baby. I wish all companies put that kind of effort into their games. I guess the downside is long waits between games, and prologues to hold us over.
oh yeah u can buy it online through the ps store, btw the PS Store is no longer slow, I just got on and everything loaded up quick, compared to last night
I'm contemplating buying this game. I played the crap out of the first game. I got GT3 with my PS2 and got bored with it pretty quickly.
I played the crap out of GT2. And am in the same boat as you with GT4, I just never got into it for whatever reason. I am not buying GT5P because GT5 is sure to have enough to keep me going for months. GT5 is the must buy.
Supposedly December in Japan. 09 in America. But its GT, they delay titles like its an unwritten law.
Yeah, I don't think GT5 will be coming out in Japan in 2008. If we're lucky, it might be released around late Spring/early Summer 2009 in Japan and a US release might be a few months after that. I'm not even sure 2009 is a safe bet, at least for the US release. It should release before GT4 Mobile though. They'll probably provide an update to GT5P around December 2008 though. Maybe damage or something like that.
I'm with Dough-Ku...I only cared about the update for DTS. The Playstation Store at this point just seems like a throw in to keep the PS3 in the same realm with the 360 as a gaming platform. Right now mine is just a really kick-a$$ BluRay unit.
Well, I thought I had did the update last week when i saw Die Hard 4...I finally beat Resistance, I thought I'd check out the store, but it said I needed the update so I guess I'll find out later tonight...The only reason I say that is because when I put my disc in, I went to the audio screen, it had DTS-HD and I checked it and the movie sounded awesome...So, is it safe to assume it'll sound even better?
Question about the store from a newbie PS3 owner. If I bought a game from there and somehow my HD crashes. Would i still be able to go back to the store and download it again w/o being charged again?
also a technical question. For those of you who are using a sound card to pass the audio from the PS3 to your 5.1 speakers, what sound card are you using and was it easy to set up?
Yes. The store keeps track of all the things you have purchased. You will see a little red shopping bag on the icon if you have already purched an item. You can access all the items you have downloaded (demos, games and everything else) by using the "View Downloads" button under your icon on the top right side of the store's front page. You can just re-download anything you want again. I just cleaned several off of mine this week to make space for GT5P.
