Mexico will begin the long road toward South Africa 2010 at Reliant Stadium, of all places.

In a David versus Goliath-type matchup, El Tri, ranked 16th in the world, will take on No. 171 Belize on June 15 -- Father’s Day – in the first leg of a CONCACAF World Cup qualifying series, organizers announced Tuesday.

The match will Belize's home leg of the second-round series. Mexico will host the return leg June 21.

The tiny Central American nation is being forced to play its abroad because it lacks the proper infrastructure to host a FIFA-sanctioned match.

“It’s been hard for us,” Belize Football Federation president Bertie Chimilio said. “We don’t have the facilities we need (in Belize).”

The match will mark the first time a World Cup qualifier is played in Houston. Previously, Reliant Stadium served as a host venue to two CONCACAF Gold Cups as well as a number of international friendlies, including two U.S.-Mexico sellouts.

“We hope (the match) continues to set the stage for Houston to be a World Cup stop when the tournament returns to the United States,” said Jamey Rootes, head of Lone Star Sports and Entertainment, which is organizing the match alongside Traffic Sports.

Tickets for the match are not on sale, yet.

Mexico next plays China on Wednesday (9 p.m., Telemundo) in a World Cup qualifier warmup in Seattle. The match will mark the debut of Jesus Ramirez as interim coach of El Tri.
