Why would the Lakers have Homecourt against us if we win out?

But if we win out, that means that we'll probably play Golden State, NOT the Nuggets, in the first round b/c we would put the Nuggets a game behind Golden State tonight. I don't if I'd rather play Utah or Golden State...

Don't be so sure of that. The race for #8 comes down to the Warriors at Suns on Monday night. If Golden State loses that game, Denver will get in. I think Phoenix smokes the Warriors.

Between the Lakers, Hornets and Rockets, the season series are as follows:

    Rockets 2-1 Lakers
    Rockets 2-2 Hornets
    Hornets 2-2 Lakers

The winning percentages for these three teams, for the games played between them are:

    Rockets 4-3 57%
    Hornets 4-4 50%
    Lakers 3-4 43%

These percentages are a calculation of the the first tie-breaking criteria for more than two teams being tied, as indicated on the NBA website.

Based on the tie-breaking rules from the NBA website (lower down the page), it appears if all three of these teams win out, there will be a three way tie, and the following will occur:

    1. The Hornets will win the Southwest division based on their better division record (10-5, vs 8-8 for the Rockets)
    2. The Rockets will take the number one overall seed as a wild-card team based on tiebreaker 1 under the "b. More Than Two Teams Tied" category. The Rockets (57%) would beat the Hornets (50%) and the Lakers (43%).
    3. The Lakers (Pacific Division Champions) will be the #2 seed based on their better conference record (currently 36-15 in the West). The conference record is criteria 3 in both lists.
    4. The Hornets (Southwest Division Champions) will be the #3 seed based on their conference record (currently 33-17 in the West)
    5. Utah will be the #4 seed as the Northwest Division Champions.

How awesome would that be to see the Rockets take the #1 seed as a wild-card team? HAHAHAHAHA. I love it. :)

Perfect, so in that case the Rockets would still have homecourt over New Orleans if they met in the playoffs. Right, regardless of not winning the division?

    sheesh

how many times does this need to be said...seeding has nothing to do with homecourt.

If/when we face NOs in the playoffs, they hold the tiebreak on us wrt who gets homecourt. They have a better division record.

I think we are going to have to reexplain this a dozen or two more times until the playoffs end.

If we play the Hornets head to head, I think that is right. The Rockets would have the home field advantage over anyone else if the Rockets, Lakers and Hornets win out and are tied at 57-25 to finish the year. However, the Rockets would initially get the #1 (as a wild-card), the Lakers #2, the Hornets #3, and the Jazz #4.

I don't think thats true. I think the number 1 seeds gets homecourt period. So there is a reason for an explanation again.

Here are NBA playoff tie-break procedures from the NBA Website :

Ties for playoff positions (including division winners) will be broken utilizing the criteria set forth in subparagraph a. below (in the case of ties involving two teams) and subparagraph b. below (in the case of ties involving more than two teams), and the guidelines set forth in subparagraph c. below.

    a. Two Teams
    (1) Better winning percentage in games against each other.
    (2) Better winning percentage against teams in own division (only if tied teams are in same division).
    (3) Better winning percentage against teams in own conference.
    (4) Better winning percentage against teams eligible for playoffs in own conference (including teams that finished the regular season tied for a playoff position).
    (5) Better winning percentage against teams eligible for playoffs in opposite conference (including teams that finished the regular season tied for a playoff position).
    (6) Better net result of total points scored less total points allowed against all opponents (“point differential”).

    b. More Than Two Teams Tied
    (1) Better winning percentage in all games among the tied teams.
    (2) Better winning percentage against teams in own division (only if all tied teams are in the same division).
    (3) Better winning percentage against teams in own conference.
    (4) Better winning percentage against teams eligible for playoffs in own conference (including teams that finished the regular season tied for a playoff position).
    (5) Better net result of total points scored less total points allowed against all opponents (“point differential”).

If the Rockets and Hornets meet head to head, then the "two teams tied" criteria would be applied at that time to determine who has home court advantage for that particular series. This would not be based on their seedings at the outset of the playoffs.

    Yahoo got it right:

    [rquoter]...
The Lakers (56-25), who clinched their first Pacific Division championship in four years and at least the No. 3 seed in the West on Friday night, need to beat visiting Sacramento on Tuesday night and have Houston lose at least one of its final three games to earn the conference’s No. 1 seed.

Should Los Angeles and Houston tie for the conference title, the Rockets get the No. 1 seed because of a 2-1 record against the Lakers. Houston was scheduled to play Sunday night at Denver and Monday night at Utah before finishing at home Wednesday night against the Clippers.

Should the Lakers tie for the conference lead with Houston and New Orleans, the Rockets would be first, the Hornets second and the Lakers third based on how the three teams fared against each other.

Who cares? If we can't beat the #8 seed, we don't deserve to advance.

I think people are just assuming we'll lose at Utah. Because Utah cheats at home. Did I ever mention that?
