I thought I'd come in with a Heypartner-esque post, and ask why everybody always talks about "this league".

"That kid's really going to be a player in this league."

"You need to be able to shoot if you're going to play in this league."

"He needs to put on some muscle if he's going to make it in this league."

Is anybody on the board actually in the NBA? You talk as if you are by referring to "this league". Now, since I post on this board, I can talk about "this BBS". But when referring to the NBA, unless I was in it, I wouldn't call it "this league".

I can always count on Mango for support. It's not just this board though. "This league" has become a new catch phrase. Just like a couple of years ago, when everybody was talking about needing to get "closure". Or, you might hear someone tell you "don't go there".

Well when something like this happens, it puts everything into perspective.

Umm... perhaps because it's the league we're talking about? Much like the way many people on this board say "we have Steve Francis." Does it really bother you?

I wouldn't say it bothers me Haven, I just get tickled when people adopt these little trendy phrases that don't make sense. If I wanted to talk about "this country", I could, because I'm actually in it. Same thing with "this planet" (believe it or not, I'm on it). If I wanted to talk about the city of Houston, I wouldn't say "this city", because I don't live there. On the other hand if I wanted to talk about Austin, I could then say "this city", and it would make sense. See what I mean? Possibly if I played in a church league, I might call it "this league", but since I haven't and never will play in the NBA, that wouldn't make sense.

I was networking with fellow colleagues today and this very subject became the active topic of discourse.

The communication style offered on this BBS is an issue that ... although esoteric in nature, is obsequious by design. It is in essence a primal necessity interfaced with ownership.

By participating we are required to feel welcome, and thus it becomes self-evident .... we feel kinship. Even at the most rudimentry levels.

    Take LHutz for instance.

    Please.

I had to look up that word, so here is the definition for all to enjoy.

    obsequious...adj......servilely compliant or deferential.

Since there are many leagues. The CBA, Europe, and various other leagues, I do not have a problem with someone talking about THIS LEAGUE..I mean that is the one in which the Rockets reside, no?

It is the programmer in TheFreak that takes offense to the improper use of "this".

He, like me, is a reluctant philospher by nature and feels he needs to know the why of things. He exists. Therefore he questions.

Being solipistic he feels ya'll do not exist beyond his fantasy world. Dang!! He could be right. [IMG]

I would tell you all what solipistic means, but when I looked up the word in the dictionary, I had to look up the words that describe the original meaning.

what does it mean to crap yourself? you don't 'crap yourself' you crap on yourself.

    back to bball, current game:
    NBA2K Finals - Rockets/Heat

Game One: Blowout, 80-58 Francis has 31 and 5 asst and Pippen (yep, I readded him) had 35.

Game Two: Mobley goes down w/ a torn hamstring (out 3 weeks - hey it's a game) and Pippen has a bone fracture in a toe - out 3 days... 'I' [IMG] lose by 13.

Game Three: Undermanned, and b/c of an injury Anderson sustained to his head by PJ Brown, Drew starts. Although Francis/Barkley ended up keeping the game close, Drew nails a 3 down by 2 w/ 5 seconds left to win 82-81 how's that Butch Carter, huh! huh! why couldn't you work something out!

Next Game: Whenever I need a break tomorrow.

Mango looked up the word and I still don't understand it! [IMG]

Third person talking stills annoys the crap out of me. That should be banned from the "Free Speech" segment of the Constitution.

I use "This League" whenever trying to explain that a college star does not make an NBA star. I find it a short way to dismiss the athletic nothings in the NCAA who are scoring against boys, but cannot score in "this league". That's my context.

Yeah...we could say in "the NBA", but "this league" is what the players/commentators say, so...we're just adopting the vernacular...I find it fun.

But my favorite adaptation is from the Mutts:

    "Yesh!!"
