I just have some questions if anybody here is familiar with international students coming here for graduate school.

My friend is interested in coming here to get a master degree in Business, but was wondering around how much would tuition be UH , or UH Clearlake, or what other reasonable Graduate school is there in Houston?

I know that they dont offer financial help for international students do they?

I'm just more familiar with undergrad. studies and tuitions.

and also .... is it even worth it? to come and get a master degree?

    thanks,

I think they do offer financial help for international students. If you work for the school, TA or whatever, I think your tuition becomes an instate tuition. Don't know how much exactly, but you can find international students from UH everywhere. I'm sure there are some here.

I don't think any government-subsidized aid can be extended to international students. You can, of course, get a loan from a bank.

I can't say whether or not its worth it without knowing your friend, his situation, his current job prospects, etc. It can be worth it for international students. All MBA programs will provide statistics on things like average salaries after the program so he can look and decide.

Besides UH, St Thomas has a program. No idea about costs. Rice has a good program (that I'm in), but it's expensive -- people also make more coming out of it. He could potentially find a job here and do a weekend MBA (at UH, St Thomas, Rice, UT, Tulane, or whatever other school is pushing into the Houston market). They are a bit more expensive, but you won't have to borrow for food as well as tuition. Of course, foreigners have more hoops to jump through to be legal to work here (something that's much easier with an MBA).

i didn't know international student can work in north America...

But for tuition in canada is a lot cheaper then the state, but still its like "buying" your degree. It cost somewhere around $450 per credits for business coursed at the 2nd or 3rd year (1 course = 3 credits typically). And for international student, its always 3x more.

Personally, i don't think its worth it unless you have parents that can back you up financially (at least a minimum of few hundreds grand US dollar), AND you think your gonna succeed at getting that master.

I recall some of my international bud from college a few year back, and i was paying around $1700 per semester (courses and books....of course we can always download those book online now :p), and he was paying over 10 grand for the same courses.

If they show financial need they wil drop the tuition from international to instate tuition.

If they get a TA or RA position (not sure how easy in business school) then they will be paid about 1400 a month and still need to pay probably 1000 per semester for tuition.

They cannot work except i think 2 maximum intern positions during the summer.

With the downturn int he economy applications for grad school have skyrocket so the chance of getting a good offer will be less. They probably have already missed the chance to apply for fall 08.

What country are they from? It matters.

Oh yeah forgot to add most of the grad students from india and china already have post grad degrees so your friend will be compete with stiff competition.

I dont know if ust has changed thier rules but they dont charge extra for out of state or international students. As far as tuition, it is about 705 per credit hour and next fall about 755. Hope that helps.

Heres thier website stthom.edu if he/she wants learn more about the programs and class times.

Like it has been said, if you work for the school as a TA, your tuition will be the same as in-state tuition (not if you work as a RA, unfortunately, at least not in UH-Clear Lake). I'm finishing my master degree in UH-Clear Lake, a normal international tuition if you don't work as a TA is around 4.000 dollars a semester for full time, drops at 1.200 or so if you are a TA.

During your first two semesters as an international student, you are not allowed to work, except jobs within your school (TA, RA, in the library, whatever). After those two semesters, you can work outside the school, but it must be validated by your international advisor (you won't be able to work at McDonald's, you need a job related to your studies).

After you graduated, if you apply for it, you can be allowed to work one full year under your student visa, it's called the OPT, it's what I will do (well, that is....if I can find a job.... ).

If you have any more questions, feel free to ask, I'll be glad to help.

I don't know, I tend to stay away from them. :D

Seriously, though, I have no idea. I would think it does but don't take my word for it.

I just went to the UH MBA information session last week and got all the financial information. The international tuition for UH MBA is 44,000 for the entire program. Its about a grand more than out of state tuition and 16k more than instate tuition. The UH Bauer School of Business is a respectable school and is a pretty damn good value. As for UT Houston and Rice I know the in state tuition is around 60k for the entire program but I am not sure what the rate is for international students though...

If your friend is looking into UH Clear Lake, there is a Student Housing right next to UHCL, it's called University Forest and it on Bay Area so it is easily accessible for public but this apartment/student housing is full of International Students both graduates and undergraduate even the office staff are students and if you go there I am sure they will help you out! and tell you what you need to know from international students perspective ad UHCL is next door so you can always ask the advisors there. :)

Hey Matpio is the 4.000 dollars a semester for Graudated School studies?

Well she's trying to come here to get a master degree .... She's from Taiwan and has a hotel/management undergrad. degree there already but wanted to get a master degree here in business and maybe work here after that.

She's trying to do it on her own with little help from her parents, so I was kinda wondering how much it might be for studies here? and what's the best/financial options.

So if she can work at school right away? or how esle can you get financial help for an international student?

    thanks for all the info
