Mo Taylor is a high points, low rebounding Power Foward, who in many peoples mind (to include myself) doesn't deserve a huge payday. So how does Mobley translate into superstar. A shooting guard that doesn't shoot all that well, can't finish very well, doesn't assist, board or play decent D. But he deserves a huge payday? Good thing the Rox can't offer him anymore than 2.2 million. He has his place on "this team", but 5 million is pushing it right now. I suspect very few teams are going to be offering up that much for his services once his contract is up. I tried unsecessfully to argue that Cato's deal was premature. And really undeserved. Ill do the same with Mobley, *until* he shows he deserves it.
vince...DaDakota The Rockets cannot pay a free agent more than they can fit under the cap, without using an exception. Come on, that's the definition of free agency within a salary cap...No? What do you mean we can match any offer? We don't have any cap room to compete at $5m. Restricted free agents (which he isn't yet, until we make an qualifying offer), does not mean we can sign someone to a contract above the cap. Restricted only means we get first right of refusal. Doesn't mean we get to pay someone above the cap without using an exception. The most we can pay Mobley w/o freeing up cap room is $2.2m (the Middle Class exception). That's it guys.
6 years, $24 million for Mobley, and I still would have to think about it for a while. One thing for certain, $4million a year tops for Mobley. The Maxwell comparison keeps coming up but let's remember, Mad Max was probably the best guard defender of his time. He also hit alot of big shots for us through the years. Vince, you say that 10 players from the draft last year were better than Mobes, but then go on to say he will be a superstar. The term "superstar" has really been lightly used around here. Mobes is a decent role player, but by no means does he deserve a check over $4mill.
IMO...Jordan was the best guard defender of all time. One Defensive Player of the Year award, 9 1st Team selection, and not for 2 years playing baseball he would have been 11 consecutive years 1st team. Most ever for a guard. The stigma of being the best scorer of all time, and the way people love to pigeon-hole, often leads us to forget MJ's complete package. Mobley should get a one year deal this year, and if he puts up these #s and a little better aka averaging 16-18 ppg and maybe 4 assists or somethin next season then we should sign him to bird rights and break the bank. you guys need to give him another season to see what he can do instead of thinking he will make the same mistakes his whole career. vince i agree i say break the bank on him if he has another excellent year next year. u guys should also give walt williams a chance who btw has been one of the most consistent double scorers on the better part of the season. if we get another explosive 3 who is an awesome athlete and defend, walt would be a great guy to come off the bench. and for everyone whining about his contract its nothing compared to alot of people who havent lived up fully to their expectations. yes i think we should unload T-Mass ------------------ --TEX
The Rockets got mobley in probably one of the top 30 steals in the all time NBA draft. I don't know too much of other guys who were steals that late in the Draft. Rodman, Anderson, and a few 25 or so more. But, anyways mobley was a steal. How many team would easily trade last years pick for Mobley straight up. Well about all but 9 or so. Keep in mind that even the best of basketball players with a few exception don't bloom until their third or fourth season. Good news, mobley is entering his third season. By the way, have you noticed that if Mobley puts on a little bit more weight he can really have a stronger game in the air. Reminding me a little of Clyde. Clyde only averaged 14 or so points his rookie year. Same that mobley is averaging in his first full season as a backup strictly shooting guard position. I'm comparing Mobley to clyde. I bet that's a first. But, if mobley played 40 minutes a game for an entire season, I think he could become a clyde clone. Well, the Clyde deal is streaching it. But, remember when portland offered their number one pick and clyde for Ralph sampson or Hakeem olajowon. How many people would like to pull a mobley and a pick for an upgrade. Don't trade mobley sign him for what ever cost. Keep him in town, or this team and you fans will be busy checking his progress in the box scores of the paper, ala Michael Dickerson and Harrington. Wow that Dickerson is playing superb, same thing that you'll be saying about Mobley if he departs next year!!
Mobley could certainly practice the Clyde drop step this summer. Image him on the left wing dribbling...first step burners to the right...if the defender overplays him to the lane, right when he gets to the elbow...he does Drexler's pivot, drop step back to the outside, straight down the lane for a scoop lay-up. How many times did Drexler do that to Ainge, Del Negro and Hornachek on our ramp to the title?
Sorry Dreamshake, I've tried to lay off, but I gotta comment on that, "...a shooting guard that doesn't shoot all that well," remark. I've tried to remain upbeat about the Rockets, but we must really suck much worse than our record indicates when our BEST SHOOTER is "a shooting guard that doesn't shoot all that well" Either that, or your wrong on all of your other assessments about Mobley.
