    Some interesting stuff happened this very day in history...

    715 Constantine ends reign as Catholic Pope

    1682 French explorer Robert La Salle reached the Mississippi River.

    1770 James Cook discovers Australia.

    1816 African Methodist Episcopal Church is organized in Philadelphia.

    1859 Mark Twain receives his Steamboat Pilot's license.

    1865 Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee surrendered his army to Union Gen. Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox Court House in Virginia.

    1881 Billy the Kid convicted of murder.

    1927 Sacco and Vanzetti sentenced to death.

    1939 Black singer Marian Anderson performed at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C., after she was denied the use of Constitution Hall by the Daughters of the American Revolution because of her race.

    1940 Germany invades Norway and Denmark

    1942 American and Philippine defenders on Bataan capitulated to Japanese forces during World War II.

    1950 Bob Hope's first TV appearance.

    1953 TV Guide publishes first edition.

    1959 NASA announced the selection of America's first seven astronauts: Scott Carpenter, Gordon Cooper, John Glenn, Gus Grissom, Wally Schirra, Alan Shepard and Donald Slayton.

    1965 The first baseball game was played in the Astrodome between the New York Yankees and the Houston Astros. The Astros won the exhibition game 2-1 in 12 innings, but Mickey Mantle hit the first indoor home run.

    1967 First Boeing 737 created.

    1968 Martin Luther King, Jr. is buried.

    1969 First Concorde flight.

    1970 The Beatles officially disband.

    1978 George Gervin hits for 63 in the last game of the year to edge out David Thompson (who scored 73) for the scoring title.

    Of course 4/9 has nothing on 12/21/2012, which we all know is the end of the world.

    Cool stuff. We have another date that is really interesting in history on 4/19.

    I think the most interesting thing about La Salle is that he finds the mouth of the Mississippi and claims all the land drained by it for France. Louisiana is then sold, traded, bought, and sold based completely on this claim.

    I think the Mayans had it wrong, their world ended about 400 years ago.

    And everyone knows the world can't end until Tmac gets out of the first round.

    These things were so cool. I always wanted to fly on one before they were retired from service.

    My dad was at that game. I have the program at home. I'll see if I can get a scan of the cover when I get home from work. Pretty cool stuff.
