ya, that happens. and asians are not considered "academic minorities". i applied to some program that had similar phrase. i didn't expect to get in knowing that asians are not considered minorities in academics, but i applied anyways, for the heck of it. it sucks, BUT if you are really good, you are going to get in. just a different place. just keep trying on the jobs. good luck to you.
but the job wouldn't exist if it weren't for that type of program, so I don't exactly understand your complaint
no it is the other way around - 81% of UT's class is there on the top 10% rule. That's the vast majority of available slots....then you get to add in athletes, legacies, and others. etc. That leaves pecious little room for discretionary admissionsj. The fact that she didn't get in was not due to some minority set-aside, it's due to the fact that she didn't finish in the top 10%. If this chick was holding offers of admission from other impressive universities, maybe i'd feel something else was amiss. But no offense to Baylor, I don't see her as a stellar student who got unjustly screwed. Rather she was pretty good but not good enough...them's the breaks with a top 10% rule.
I guess I should have clarified. It's a post graduate internship that pays next nothing -- if anything. So this "job" and the fact that exists in first place because of this program is a non-issue to me. It's just a solid opportunity for a guy like me looking to get into the administrative, behind-the-scenes of college athletics. Those jobs are so difficult to get and almost certainly require relocation. This opportunity is 20 minutes from home hence the bitterness.
Whoa slowdown there cowboy. I feel your pain but on the other end of the boat. Affirmative Action may or may not have gotten my foot in the door for at least an interview at my job. Unfortunately we still live in a society where the color of your skin, or the religon you practice can affect whether or not your employed. Until employers stop putting the wrong people in the hiring process, "AA" will always be a sour spot for the races one way or another.
in my opinion, the top 10% rule is colorblind. just make the top 10% and youre in. if you go to a really really competitive school, then i dont think UT is your first choice, its probably a fall back school... if youre one of those who fall just outside of the top 10%, transfer to a school in the inner city. then youll probably graduate top 5% and youll get that automatic acceptance. life sucks and thems da breaks. shoot, asians are minorities w/in society but they dont get the benefit of affirmative action when it comes to academics. thats double bs and you dont see them suing over it.
Baylor more selective than UT? Am I missing something? No one wants to live in that dump called Waco anyway.
No kidding - what a whiny b!tch. Did the article even mention her SAT score? Thousands of qualified people get rejected from UT - including minorities. Go to UT-A or UT-D, suck it up for a year, and transfer. LSU is a joke to get accepted into, and Baylor isn't exactly near UT's level. I don't understand why it list those two schools as if they're comparable to UT. Notice it also doesn't list anywhere she was rejected from.
UT is a pretty good school, but it isn't that hard to get into. If you get a decent SAT score you get in.
http://www.projectonfairrepresentation.org/wp-content/uploads/2008/04/final-ut-complaint.pdf On the first occasion that Plaintiff took the SAT, she scored a 540 on the critical reading portion of the exam and a 630 on the math portion of the exam for a total of 1170. On the second occasion, she scored a 500 on the critical reading portion of the exam and a 680 on the math portion of the exam for a total of 1180.
So if you are white and live in Sugar Land, that means you are rich? That is just laughable. Do me a favor...drive around Sugar Land and then tell me how rich everybody is.
Those scores are not on the same scale that most of the guys on the board took. They have changed since the 90's
So she scored a 1220 - the average SAT score for freshmen entering UT is 1230 (http://bealonghorn.utexas.edu/img/prod75_005855.pdf). I still don't understand why she would be so surprised she didn't get in - enough to even bring a lawsuit. EDIT: Casey they are the same scale. The only addition was a "writing portion", which adds an additional 800 points to bring it to a 2400 scale. Most colleges don't even bother with your writing score though, unless you absolutely bomb it.
Do me a favor. Drive around Fort Bend Austin High School. Then drive around Houston (ISD) Austin HS. Then tell me the schools, neighborhoods, and household income of the families are the same. That is just laughable.
