I'm sure they got league clearance before making the donation to make sure they don't get punished.

I remember the 49ers back in the 90's got into some trouble when they donated to Steve Young's foundation, which the NFL found could be salary cap violation.

But I am sure the Rockets are not stupid enough to do such a thing, especially with David Stern there in person.

You should probably educate yourself on what Mutombo's foundation has done before making uninformed posts like this.

Mutombo's foundation has done alot. But it is not unfounded to suggest that the Africa region is in need so much more help Still you have to start somewhere and Mutombo has definitely his money where his mouth is. Which is more than most of us.

Also a note on this thread and the originator... I don't want to call it stupid but that is what I am thinking. Les has talked highly of Mutombo and his work and seems genuine in wanting to help. But even if he is the corrupt ungenuine man that you suggest the people still get helped. In an era when people are creatively manipulating the CBA every which way you can think of you are going to b**** about a donation as being unethical is stupid. b**** about Brent Barry returning to SA or signing Van Horn to get Kidd or LA getting Gasol for Kwame Brown or any number of deals designed to creatively undermine the essence of the CBA. But let Les give to a foundation that will help people in desperate need. And rather that you wasting energy creating a thread worrying about it's ethics why not join in by putting your ethics and money were your mouth is and donate as well.

WHY we have to be skeptical of Les Alexander's real intention?

At the end of the day, he donated US$750K, and the Tux & Tennies Charity Gala gartnered another US$800K, which made up a total of > US$1.5M for Uncle Mutombo, which will be flowed to the poor in Congo, which is GREAT....

I do think that Yao gives the Rockets an advantage with some player....they can get shoe deals with China by playing here, and the team can get them a good contract in China if they have to cut them ...basically stash a player overseas until they need him.

Mike Harris for instance....It would be interesting to see his contract there....but if that is an advantage....good for us.

I think you'd be hard-pressed to make the case that Mutombo's hospital in Kinshasa has made matters worse there.

The point wasn't whether the post was true or not. Of course that region needs non-financial help. But what's the point of mentioning that if all you're going to offer is some brief, vague and trite analysis of the situation? It was unnecessary pablum that seemed to denigrate what Mutombo has done.
