Sometimes I still can't believe I saw Ruby shoot Oswald live on TV. People today just can't get a sense of what it was like. I'd seen Kennedy, LBJ, Connally, Yarbrough and their wives in the motorcade down Broadway, from what is now Hobby Airport, the day before he was killed. Everyone who could was glued to the tube watching Oswald come out. When he was shot, my cousin and I cheered. Just stood up and cheered. Later, we realized what a disaster it was to clearing up the murder of Jack Kennedy. Dr. King's murder shocked us all and the country seemed to erupt in violence and despair. I was watching live TV as Bobby gave his victory speech for winning the California primary and was on such a high because I knew he would be winning the nomination and that no one could beat him. Still watching after the speech, I saw him shot down in disbelief. The 1968 Democratic Convention, watching Vietnam (covered far differently, and better, than Iraq) on the evening news, Kent State, where innocents were gunned down by our own National Guard... No, some of you just don't have a clue.
My business partner is about 50. He was sharing some insight on this today over lunch. He said, like you, the shocking one was Bobby Kennedy. And that it followed on the heels of MLK. All the uncertainty...the sense of not knowing who was really in power. He mentioned Kent State. Difficult times, to say the very least.
I paid tribute in my movie to him.... what a man. <object width="425" height="355"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/etOJAscV4ik&hl=en"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/etOJAscV4ik&hl=en" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="355"></embed></object>
I really liked Bobby Kennedy. Much more than his brother, Jack, although I remain a fan of his. Just as charismatic as a speaker, but warmer and seemed more in tune to the people. Every hope and dream associated with Jack that vanished with his murder was added to Bobby's shoulder's. It's a testament to him that he was able to bear that burden with aplomb. If ever someone was destined to do great things, it was Bobby. Fate gave us something else.
That's evident, but what does it have to do with anything? We're talking about an important date in recent history. We're talking about a man who made a difference. MLK was not God or even God-like. Just ask the FBI to play some tapes for you if you think otherwise. He was merely a man who saw injustice and acted on it in ways most of us could not or would not and showed many that it was possible for our country to live up to the ideals it was founded on. That's worthy of remembrance.
First of all I said nothing in this thread about MLK. Moe made a simple joke about never hearing about him and the holier-than-thous came out of the clouds. It's just a bit much.
so shocked you would take this position mlk obama vy what do all three have in common in meowgi's eyes
But why make a joke in the first place? I love how people like to act like douches and then feign surprise when people call them on it.
Excellent Quote This one sounds very Malcom-esque "Power concedes nothing without Demand" - Malcolm X Rocket River
the difference being that at the time Malcolm was saying that, he was also advocating "any means necessary..." while King was preaching non-violence.
I saw that and Appreciated it I was curious as to where that statue was located when 1st viewing the movie I thought it was in Pakistan but was no sure Rocket River
because nobody else was ever going to say it. I was feeling daring today. Gandhi was a terrorist and Hitler is my god.
A great mistake IMO is the characterization of Malcolm People like to jump to the . . HE WANNA SHOOT YOU card but the reality of the statements is .. IF AFTER ELSE FAILS. . then get your gun Which is All too American! Try to be diplomatic. . . Try to talk it out Try to beg and plead but If nothing else works . . .then goto violence Which is the way of this world. . . why should people seeking justice align themselves to never defending themselves or their position?
