MLK was shot 40 years ago today in Memphis. He'd be 79 years old. Here's the conclusion to the speech he gave the day before he died... one of the greatest and perhaps the most amazing in American History... <object width="425" height="355"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/o0FiCxZKuv8&hl=en"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/o0FiCxZKuv8&hl=en" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="355"></embed></object>

Rev. Dr. MLK, Jr. Preacher Speaker Activist Revolutionary Son Husband Father "Early morning, April 4... shots ring out... in a Memphis sky..."
Some of my favorite Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. quotes: Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter In the End, we will remember not the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy. Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that He who passively accepts evil is as much involved in it as he who helps to perpetrate it. Freedom is never voluntarily given by the oppressor; it must be demanded by the oppressed
I dig this quote from MLK Jr. "Keep climbing. If you can't fly, run. If you can't run, walk. If you can't walk, crawl. But by all means, keep moving!"
Lighten up, its just a joke... everybody knows MLK was a amazing person and he gets a lot of love. And how he has a holiday, the month of February, and a street name in every inner city. Its not like we don't hear about it all the time. Other Black Men did a lot of good for this Country too.
We have a holiday. February is Black History Month. Go do some reading as to why the streets named for him are often confined to those "inner cities." Nothing I've posted even suggested the diminishment of the accomplishment of others. You may hear about it all the time, but it doesn't appear you're listening.
Some of you younger guys really do not have a clue of what it was like 40 years ago. For you that may seem like an eternity since it was "before you were born" and all, but it was just yesterday by historical standards. For some of us, it was a profound time in our life, we watched German Shepherd police dogs attack people, we saw the firehoses turned on crowds, we watched RFK lay in a pool of his own blood on live TV, we saw Jack Ruby gun down Oswald on live TV, we saw our brothers and sisters gunned down in Vietnam and Kent State, we saw...a lot of ****, that you, hopefully, will never have to experience. For anyone, whether out of ignorance or insolance, to belittle, disparage, denigrate, or diminish the accomplishments of Martin Luther King, on this day, of all days, is insulting. No pudding for you Moes and Meowgi, you suck dude.
Ruby's thing was in 1963... technically, and by mathematical standards, more than 40 years ago, grandpa... Dudes. Lighten up. This is the HANGOUT.
Wow you guys sure are sensitive about MLK. I'm just saying the dude gets major hype. Not taking anything away from him at all. I've seen the movie on his life, I've read his quotes, I've studied the time period. I just happen to be of the opinion that there were other great men who did a lot for this country don't get as much recognition. Pardon my ignorance.
That's a fine position to take. But the thread is about MLK getting shot and the speech he gave the night before, not about whether others deserve greater recognition. I'm heartened you've seen a real movie and read actual quotes. Might I suggest a book: Simple Justice: The History of Brown v. Board of Education and Black America's Struggle for Equality, by Richard Kluger. It's an easy read.
