To be fair, I can definitely see why outsiders have a negative opinion of Houston. If you come here as, say, a business traveler, you will only see the airport and whichever crappy Greenspoint hotel your company puts you in, because the sprawl and lack of public transit makes it impossible to check out the rest of the city. We like (or at least tolerate) Houston because we live here, but it's a terrible place for visitors.
quite honestly, i was born, raised, and still live here and i can agree with the sentiments - houston really isn't a "great city". name something distinctive that makes the city unique and impressive. is it our historic architecture? no. look at chicago. is it our amazing transit system? no. look at new york. is it our star power? no. look at los angeles. is it our beach? no. galveston is 1 hour away, and you could hardly call it swimmable. is it our aerospace? not really - it's in clear lake. is it our weather? no. look at san diego, san francisco. is it our people? sure, but most texans are friendly. is it our airport? no. it's almost as bad as memphis. is it our arts? no. san antonio, austin, and new orleans have thriving communities. is it our high-fashion lifestyle? no. that's dallas. (some would argue this is a good thing). for being so huge, with so much money flowing, a rich energy-based economy, i'd lovingly say that houston is underachieving it's true possibilities. we could have so much more, yet we're stuck with endless strip malls, concrete, and road construction that won't ever solve our traffic problem. i say it with love, but houston isn't what it could be.
Houston could improve its image by abandoning this road idea, turning all streets into waterways, and giving everyone their own jet-ski.
well, that's not really my point. i was saying that Houston has nothing distinctive and original about it that appeals to visitors. it's convenient to live in because of food, ample parking, and living costs... and that not saying much to a true "signature" experience in Houston.
I could see how as an outsider visiting, not enjoying Houston. But I think its a great place to live and raise a family.
