I think Sears might have service people. Recently we bought something there and they asked if we wanted someone to come out and check out our a/c in our house. We said no though. They will probably screw you out of lots of money anyway.

Maybe not screw you but they'll try to get as much money from you as you can.
Plus, some guys will charge more than others. It always best to get someone thats referred to you as oppose to getting some random guy off the yellow pages.

In my area they charge an $80 "trip fee" ($50 in greater Houston) plus an additional $1.25 per minute. Is this normal??

 

These companies that Tynan recommends tend to charge a lot more then an average company. Abacus for example charges for estimates, and when you get their estimate they are usually 500 or more then other estimates you get. I guess they have to pay for all that advertising that they do.

I just paid $228 to get an A/C leak fixed (Indoor Comfort Specialist - Houston). All the guy did was blow air into my drainage tube. Then he said my evaporator coil needs cleaning, and wanted to charge me another $179 to clean it. I declined the evaporator coil cleaning and have decided clean it myself. Does anyone know where i can buy the chemicals needed to clean the coils?

My dad's ac went out a couple of years back and all the estimates were for close to $3000. This guy was able to do it for $1800.
