Why is it all too often and all too common for some family which is going through a rough time, which includes a divorce, a child custody dispute, and/or difficult financial times, the course of action is more and more ending in murder and tragedy. Latest news over at CNN has some guy who checked into a hotel and drowned his three kids in the bath tub. He was going through a child custody case.

It just seems everywhere we turn nowadays...the solution to these problems is to:

    a.) Kill the kids
    b.) Kill the ex
c.) Kill the kids and ex
d.) Kill the new significant other and ex
e.) Kill em all (including the perpetrator of the injustice)

Is this only an American thing or is this happening all over the world?

I just wish people could put things in perspective better. There are alternatives to jumping off the deep end. It may seem like the end of the world at the time...but it's only because that is you putting yourself in that position. Life can go on after a divorce, folks. It just seems so easy for someone to take this route as the easy way out of all their problems. Why punish your own children and take away their lives because you couldn't make it work with your significant other? That is so shallow and makes you out to be a monster.

Whatever. It's unforgivable in my book.

I think the operative word here, Surfguy, is Monster. For every man or woman who does these unspeakable things to their kids (and/or each other), you have countless millions who are simply wondering how to pay for their children's college education, pay for gas for their 2.5 cars, pay for healthcare, pay their mortgage, pay for a multi-trillion dollar Federal debt, or are wondering where to go for summer vacation, what to get each other for their anniversary, which new car to buy (one with better gas mileage!), what kind of flowers to put in the front flower beds this spring. Stuff like that.

We have so much media coverage and so many sources for news that every tragic incident gets reported on like it's an enormous deal, when really it is extremely rare and being reported to attempt to boost ratings among the "hurray! morbid crap rocks!!" crowd.

Impeach Bush and let him sell Snow Cones in Lhasa.

This kind of crap happens in every country. We just happen to be one of the few that thinks it should be headline news.

I think I'm going to move to Canada and live in the woods. That way...I won't get any news and that is fine by me. My stats work something like this...for every 100 people in America...10 of them are pieces of *****.

I don't think so.....I mean it does happen but I'm gonna make an uneducated guess that not nearly as often.....maybe it's the overall high stress level in the States.....maybe it also has to do with a high percentage of people living more independently and far away from siblings/parents and other family......I dunno...

It happens in every country and its happened for ages.

Genocide has always existed sadly and there's always unspeakable acts of torture and murder.

Read about ancient civilizations and you'll read about hearts carved out, diseases spread to wipe out civilizations, forced migration over certain races of people, mass rape of children and women, pedophilia in ancient Greece, crucifixions in ancient Rome where survivors would lay nailed on the cross for days while rabid dogs would bite their feet off from the rotting smell. The fascination with Christ dying on the cross was how quickly he actually did die in comparison to most people. He was thought of as a weakling if he couldn't even manage to live for a few days while nailed to the cross. But that's a different topic of discussion.

Historically mankind has been very cruel to its fellowmen and women just to have control over land on Earth that's not even a fraction of a dot past Saturn as Carl Sagan put it.

Perspective flies out the window once one seriously considers murder or suicide. The difference depends on how narcissistic that person is.

I am by no means an expert on the subject, but there is a substantial body of sociology work out there that suggests that violent crime in societies tends to rise in times of war.

Not trying to justify what this guy did though. That's pretty disturbing.

If you think that people don't kill their kids in other countries with much less police and laws then you are mistaken.

Pre-Islam they did, yes. More recently, there were such instances in India and China of parents burying their baby girls.

This is what I really hate about the news. I miss out on so much important stuff because I hated filtering out this kind of crap in between the real news.

Thankfully there's the internet, where I can immediately dicipher between news I want to know, and news I could care less about.

I don't know about India. I do know it is not true about China. I am not saying it has never happened in a coutry with over a billion people. I just think the way you put it like it is not extremely unusual is very misleading.

Back to the original post, I do think the percentage of someone killing his parents/spouse/children in this country is a bit too high compared to many other countries, including China. Besides, you have something like what happened in Texas (Waco) and Arizona(I do not remeber the specific place), which I think are even worse.

If you make a claim like that, you better give a link too. This site is so great because people always back up what they say with credible source, not pulling something out of their ass. And you should also make it clear whether what you are talking about in India and China are just isolated incidents or common practice. Remember we are discussing the horrible events as common practice here.

Nailed it. Having three 24 hour a day news outlets as opposed to one hour a day of network news, plus the internet leads these things to be reported far, far more than ever before.
