What is it with you and your "lazy" label? Didn't you say people who go on blind dates are "lazy" too? Now so are people who choose to join a frat?

Joining a frat certainly ain't my cup of tea, but I don't think people who choose to join them are "lazy". There's nothing wrong with choosing an easier way to do something (make friends, meet people etc.)

I choose to drive to work in the morning instead of crawl. Does that make me "lazy" as well?

Not to harp on this one too much but the same could be said about a mentor at work. Does having a mentor help you figure things out and keep you on the right track make you lazy?

yeah, you've got it nailed down pat....

i had a ton of friends in high school, had a ton of friends in college, and STILL decided to join a fraternity. not because i was lonely, or because i needed friends, but because i wanted to join an organization of like-minded yet diverse gentlemen.

really like that "lazy" analogy you're going with, though.... that's just brilliant.

    here's another  for ya.

Agreed. It's kind of like the people who thought they were "popular" in high school. There's an idea among the popular, Greeks, etc., that they are special, well-connected, and the rest of us are "have-nots" who are jealous because we tried to get in and didn't make it. Well, the truth is that the rest of us don't care. We'll let you guys do your thing and make yourselves feel better; meanwhile we will go on with our lives without the added pressures of having to fit into a Greek organization, and we will work, and we will have friends, and we will never feel like we missed a thing. Most of us never even tried to get in; I even picked a school on purpose (for my original undergraduate experience) that didn't have any, so I wouldn't have to deal with hearing about it all the time.

I think it's about how people interact socially, as well. There's a certain amount of acting "cool" and looking/acting alike that is expected for Greeks. Some of us feel like that would keep us from being ourselves, and don't want to have to go through college playing a role. Some of us would not fit that social type, nor care to. And fraternities sound like they would be a lot more bearable than sororities... it seems like the peer pressure in the female organizations is a lot more intense. I feel like it's better to learn to be your own self in college instead of fitting into somebody's prearranged box.

Finally, one thing I don't like about them is how they exclude so many people, and it's all about picking and choosing, who's in and who's out, and pecking order. Why can't people learn to be friends with everybody, instead of having some unreasonable social order that seems more suited to animals who can't think abstractly?

(and: Will Rice Will Sweep. I will be very surprised if any of you know what this means. :) )

That's what unpopular people say. ;)

Edit: I never felt any pressure to fit in anywhere, though. If I would have, I wouldn't have joined.

yes, yes... every greek organization is EXACTLY the same. no differences whatsoever. none. every greek lettered organization is comprised of the same cool kids, everyone one of which is rich, good looking, and well connected.

but how's that giant baggage of insecurity holding up? seems like it's a little full.

Depends on the school and Greek community there, but generally, probably NOT.
