If so many people are not happy with the NBA Playoff seedings, why not vote to change or vote for a new commissioner. I don't get this dictatorship style of leadership in the NBA. Or maybe the owners are fine with David Stern and don't complain about seedings or anything big, that's why he's still the commissioner. Sort of like a communist party; the party votes for the head of state. If they don't complain, then who cares what the people think!
I'm thinking as long as the owners get some reasonable profit, they won't complain much. Not all of them are crazy about buying championships like Cuban. Plus I don't think anyone has protested the seedings formally. Stern is a good commish, however I'm all for a few fresh changes. Every now and then you gotta shake things up a bit.
David Stern is the best commissioner in sports. Why in the world would anyone vote him "out of office" because the playoff seedings aren't exactly perfect?
David Stern is by far the best commissioner in sports atm. I think since he's come in players in general have really cooled off. There used to be soooo many fights ... lol. I guess that was entertaining too, but this isn't hockey.
David Stern is easily the best commisioner. Why? -Most Commisioners you don't even know -The NBA is not doing that bad, and the ratings are not high but decent -He's done a good job getting foreign fans into the american sport -Tickets are still being sold, and some games are sellouts ^ ^ This may be off topic with you're, but best for the chat coming on right now David Stern's term: They're may not be one, actually. If there is one, it's very long. I think they vote for commisioner when the commisioner resigns. One of the things we don't know though, being that he keeps many rumours and secrets from us. =/
I could be wrong, but I remember something about Stern getting an extension a couple of years back. Also something about him making a cool 6M a year!
The guy is horrible. He used to be good but he has been around too long. For christ's sake the guy was murdering people in the media who questioned the officials and then it is discovered that one of them (that we know of) is fixing games and he refuses to take responsibility and still walks away unscathed. He should have lost his job right there but the guy is effing Teflon Don of the NBA. He has also done quite a job of neutering players with his over the top dress code, new basketball (that sucked according the guys who actually have to use it) and his inability to understand what competition means. Do you think someone who has ever played the game or had a friend for that matter thinks it's correct for guys to be suspended for walking 10 feet away from their bench when a teammate is being assaulted? BTW, he isn't as great as a lot of people think at his job. The NBA's popularity soared early in his career as Commissioner because a guy who wore #23 was playing like the GOAT and just happened to be sponsored by Nike who launched one of the most effective global ad campaigns in history.
Only the bosses living it up at their estates in Yalta and Haifa have the power to change the Commish
Look who his competition is: Goodell, Roger and Selig, Bud Nuff said. He is #1 by default as far as modern big time pro sports go....the best comissioner was Paul Tagliabue.
I am no fan of the guy, but the dude has done an amazing job for the owners and the league. I am sure the owners and players raking in millions dont hate the guy.
the nba is the most globalized american league all thanks to stern. one insider said that they dont see the disbalance in the conferences as a major problem. at least not yet.
Why do some people think that Stern decides everything himself? NBA Committee Votes The NBA's competition committee approved five small rules changes that will take effect in the 2006-07 season if approved by the league's Board of Governors, ESPN.com learned Friday. The most notable change would be to the so-called "clear path rule," covering situations in which a player is intentionally fouled to prevent a breakaway. The team being fouled would get two shots and the ball under the proposed change. Currently, the penalty is one shot and the ball. The other changes approved by the league's competition committee, made up of one representative from each of the 30 teams, are as follows: • When a player on the receiving end of a punching, elbowing or flagrant category two foul is unable to attempt his foul shots, one of the four teammates who were on the court when the foul happened would be able to take the free throws in his place. Under current rules, the team that committed the foul can choose any player on the opposing team -- even someone on the bench -- to shoot the free throws. • Players who are not lined up along the lane would be prohibited from standing anywhere beneath the foul line extended when free throws are being shot. This would end the practice of a player dashing in from the corner to try to tip in a missed free throw. • In an effort to improve the flow of the game, referees would be permitted to let play continue when a defending team gained possession of the ball a split-second after the shot clock expires. Under current rules, if the buzzer sounds when a shot is in mid-air and the ball misses the rim, the referees are required to stop play and award the ball out of bounds on the sideline. • Unlimited substitutions would be allowed during all 20-second timeouts. Currently, they are allowed only during the final two minutes of each half. The Board of Governors will vote on the proposed changes in April. The "clear path" rule would be tweaked because statistics showed teams are averaging less than 2 points when clear path fouls are called. "The original idea behind the clear path foul was we didn't want them to occur. But now, when they do occur, the offended team is not getting the yield point-wise that they should be," NBA vice president Stu Jackson told ESPN.com. The committee turned down a proposal to move the markings along the foul lane, would would have allowed the non-shooting team's players to line up a few inches closer to the shooter when free throws were about to be attempted. "We're going to continue to evaluate that one. There's a feeling that maybe it's getting more difficult to secure a rebound as the non-shooting team on a missed free throw, with buys getting pushed under [the basket]," Jackson said. "We didn't pass that one, but we're looking at it." Other stories with similar themes: More Instant Replay under Review Colangelo to head Committee In regards to the current NBA Playoff system and changing it to something else, there might be situations in the NFL and MLB that don't always get the strongest teams into the Playoffs and/or have it seeded properly. Considering the size of the NBA (30 teams), they take a generous amount of teams into the Playoffs. Here is an article about the NFL Playoff Structure: Should we change the playoff structure? If the feelings are for taking the Top 16 teams regardless of geographic location or Divisional placement, then give it some more time to work out. It took years of poor ownership oversight to let so many Eastern Conference teams fall behind and it will take several years of strong management (and some luck) to rectify it.
Not many commissars have been able to carry out diplomacy on foreign soil, Stern has. The only thing that bothered me was his stance with the refs. He should have fired all of them and hired new ones. A new NBA, where every player is treated equally by refs regardless name recognition.
Stern is the best commish He has grown his sport in to the 2nd most popular sport in the world [2nd to foot ball in America and 2nd to soccer everywhere else] He has his faults. . but he is better than the others Rocket River
For those of you who praise him and all, how do you know a new one cannot do better? Was Carol Dawson a good general manager for us? Did people have doubts about Morey? If the owners want to get global, then just search for a former statesman or something. Powell maybe? I think having to run for office makes the office much more productive than knowing you're guaranteed the job until you quit just as long as you don't suck. I don't have anything against Stern. I was just wondering why people don't take the playoff seedings to Stern if they're not happy. Like I said before, if owners are fine, then his job stays!
I thought baseball was 2nd biggest sport in America. It also is about as global as basketball since a lot of central american countries play it, as well as Japan. Also I don't think you can give credit for basketball's global expansion to Europe and Asia entirely. Those leagues have their own GMs and commissioners as well I bet, and they don't owe the NBA anything. Also year in and year out lately the NBA Finals have had some of the worst ratings in all major global sports in the US. The World Series had far better ratings last year than the NBA Finals which was the lowest ratings to date. There's no parity in basketball. It's the same 4 or 5 teams that are in the Finals usually where as in baseball and football its had a bit more diversity. Also there was an article stating that a lot of owners are actually losing money since the fan base is so horrible or the way revenue is spread around. Even Mark Cuban is losing money correct? Also didn't David Stern talk about addressing this concern too? He really hasn't faired too well the past few years and I think he's only benefited from Jordan. Not even Lebron could garner as much as much publicity in last years Finals the way Jordan could. So post Jordan era he's sucked balls. And lets not forget the officiating scandal.
