Maybe there are not many UNDER 6 feet but Aaron Brooks is right at 6' 0" which is comparible to other NBA starting PGs... PGs under 6'2" starting in the NBA: Eastern Conference Rajon Rando 6' 1" Jameer Nelson 6' 0" TJ Ford 6' 0" Travis Diener 6' 1" Raymond Felton 6' 1" Mo Williams 6' 1" Nate Robinson 5' 9" Jason Williams 6'1" Western Confernce Chris Paul 6' 0" Derek Fisher 6' 1" Chucky Atkins 5' 11" Allen Iverson 6' 0" Breven Knight 5' 10" Mike Conley 6' 1" Earl Watson 6' 1" Other notables at 6'2" Mike Bibby Andre Miller Tony Parker Jason Terry Give AB some time, he will be fine. Chris Paul is the exception not the rule. In general it's very difficult for short point guards to thrive in the NBA. The book's still out on Conley, and Felton is not that short. In the Western conference you can't just settle for adequate point guards (see Alston, Rafer). The Rockets will have to keep an eye out to try to find another franchise PG, but since they won't be drafting in the top 5 picks anytime soon their chances of finding that solution domestically are slim to none. More likely we'd have to find one that we could import a la Parker/Ginobili/Calderon/Juan Carlos Navarro. Here's hoping.
I think it's still early. So far, I have seen some glimpses of AB good points i.e. his speed, shooting and his ball control though there are many games he has been awful in those three aspects. Saying that, he looked very hesitant and seemed to be severely lacking in confidence of his own ability.
He shows some promise, but who knows... we'll find out based on who the Rockets go for this off-season and/or next season.
I can't judge him on just a few games, but he has been highly inconsistent. Some days, he lights it up, and other days, he shoots like Rafer and turns it over like BJax. At least with Landry you know you're going to get all-out hustle, monster dunks, and his pearly whites.
There are plenty of rotation PGs around 6ft, starters like Chris Paul, Allen Iverson, Derek Fisher, Rajon Rondo, Jameer Nelson. All the previous mentioned players are on playoff contenders. We might even play against 3 of the first guys mentioned in the Western conference. Height is the least of my worries for him. I worry more about his shooting and passing.
I had to go back and look at some videos of him online, and let me say, this kid has ALL the right skills. He can pass, he can shoot, and surprisingly (despite contrary belief), he has good court vision. Check out some of his videos. Even this season, I'm seen him make some incredible passes that leave me wondering "how the hell..." It's too early to judge, but I do believe he can be and will be the future PG of this team. Kid needs time to develop. Oh, and he's hella quick!
I really like this post because with no disrespect to A.Brooks, I really don't think he will be a starting PG in this league becuz of his size, sure he is quick but he is not strong enough to contain other PGs. Just look at Tmac, he needs a Shane Battier to contain other SG/SFs in the league. Who does Kobe have for that? Sorry if Im being to negative to all u Rockets believers, maybe my 8 beers in an hour 1/2 made me post this...but this is my belief. I don't think we can afford A.B. to get mismatched becuz of his size on D...since we have McLady in the same lineup.
This is his first year. Give him at least 1 year in the belt. Look how Rajon Rondo looked in his first year in the league. A stretch of good games, many bad games, and people were saying how he's never gonna cut it if he doesn't round his game out with an outside shot, how he's a pure slasher and can't really play point guard. Look how well he's done this year being thrown into the deep end of the pool with the big 3 in Boston. Same thing can happen to Brooks. He has all the tools. He just needs the time to develop his game for the big league.
Too soon to say exactly what he can do. He isn't going to be a GREAT PG though, he just doesn't have that PG element that they all have before they even come to the league. He was a shoot first PG in college too, he's never really had to be the set up man so he has to be given time to learn. I don't really think we were looking for that though, I think the rockets were looking for a guy who could kill the defense with explosive speed and get in the paint and finish. He has showed he can do those things and he can still get better at them. It's pretty hard to get that really good pass first PG as low in the draft as they picked. We shouldn't have unrealistic expectations of what he should be. He has played well for a low first round rookie, what more could you ask for?
Well you never know, dywane wade was a sub par player for his first season, and he was starting games. Brooks probably need more time before he could shine. He does have good handles and his speed is probably faster than TJ Ford. Only time will tell, t-mac never showed up big in his raptors days, he never had a good chance to shine until he left to orlando. Same as kobe, yao and even ginobli. Kobe was basically draft stolen by lakers, and ginobli was a huge steal from spurs. And some experts said brooks could be quite a steal as well.
I cant believe how some of you are jumping the gun to write this kid off. Remember Luis is 27 and no one scouting rookies knew what was coming from Landry. Brooks has showed potential, give him more time before you write him off. Anyways, Im really excited to see what we do with our draft picks this summer, seems we finally have some smart people making decisions for this team.
