    Astros release pitcher Woody Williams

    The Astros released righthander Woody Williams on Saturday and announced Chris Sampson will occupy the final spot in the starting rotation. Williams was placed on waivers with the purpose of giving him his unconditional release, general manager Ed Wade said.

    Williams, who was to make $6.5 million this season, was 0-3 with an 11.32 ERA in six spring appearances. The Astros also announced that Roy Oswalt, Brandon Backe, Wandy Rodriguez and Shawn Chacon will pitch in the season-opening four-game series at San Diego, which begins Monday.

    That one was easy to see coming. Despite the assertions by a lot of fans that he was a rotation lock because of money, Cooper is a straight shooter, and an objective look at his quotes showed that this was the likely direction.

    He will probably end up on a contending team and find his form again. Then, he will end up beating the Astros or something. The baseball gods are strange in that way. lol

    Good guy, class act, had a great career, would make a great coach. Wish his return to Houston came a few years earlier.

    Great move. I hope Wade still could make a move or two small moves and brings in a pitcher who was cut by another team. I don't want to see Moehler make this team. I think guys like Claudio Vargas or Josh Towers could be worth a shot.

    Why not?

    The Astros have no interest in Vargas, per Joe Duarte. Josh Towers cleared waivers and is in AAA now.

    It wasn't that bad. He had a short contract. It wasn't like Kelvin Cato, Maloney, Moochie, or Mo Taylor.
