I couldn't figure out how to respond to that without telling Batman, someone I respect, that he's nuts, so thanks for the post. I agree with you. I think most people here, on both sides of the aisle, and the middle, would.

Not to speak for the batman, but I think you guys are missing the larger point of what he was trying to say. Read what he said again.

It's a comparison that has been made by others as well.

Great. That just means that others have, IMO, been wrong.

The MLK speech in there stated that we were not following God's path during a time of war. MLK did not accuse the government of manufacturing a virus for the purpose of genocide. He did not indicate that the US deserved to have 3,000 innocents die just because they went to work on a Tuesday afternoon...the differences are endless.

I don't think that Batman is nuts. I just think he is wrong.

There are some liberal posters on this board that I have respect for, even though we disagree on damned near everything. Batman, B-Bob, and you are certainly on that list.

Good to see that we can agree on something that I believe is important.

I suppose it IS a shame how cynical we've become....

Batman isn't nuts. But his Hillary hate posts are. When Obama gets the nomination in a few weeks he'll be back to his old self. There's absolutely nothing she's said to weaken Obama wasn't (and isn't) going to brought up ten fold in the general. Thankfully he's not as fragile as his supporters are sensitive.

I don't think anyone is saying Wright is a present day MLK. The comparison is the media reaction to these 30-second clips.

Also, it is evidence of our current prejudices that a couple of cherry-picked statements from Rev. Wright generate more anger and backlash than the repeated statements of the white religious right, people like Jerry Falwell, for example.

Yeah the whole AIDS/syphilis conspiracy theory is kooky, but I honestly think it does less harm than the truly bigoted statements such as blaming homosexuals for 9/11, or saying "the black people of New Orleans brought their suffering after Hurricane Katrina on themselves". The difference is Wright is criticizing the government as an entity operating against the interests of its people, Falwell and others are criticizing our nation's people, lifestyles, choices, etc., in defense of a governing system, be it religious or state.

I have a hard time respecting Batman given his frequent profanity laced drunken tirades.

As opposed to bravado laden, semi-accurate posts?

As opposed to posts where you think you are far more clever than you really are, making thinly veiled references to a person's name (eg Ubama)?

I'll take the occasional having too much to drink prior to posting, thanks.

I didn't mean literally nuts. Figuratively. It's a lousy comparison, to put it mildly, if you prefer.

It's quite difficult to genuinely discuss Obama's flaws/mistakes in the midst of the current climate, even now I may come to regret this reply. But I admit there are some overreactions by the pro-Obama crowd.

I've mentioned some of his current mistakes imo. Here's an updated list. I don't like:

The recent rejection of Wright he gave in that View interview. He pretty much gave qualifier after qualifier of if "Wright didn't apologize blah blah blah" then Obama would've left Trinity if Wright didn't step down. Now these qualifiers seem reasonable on the surface, and let's just assume media outlets even report them in their news articles of how "Obama would've left Trinity if Wright didn't". There's two things in his great speech that shows inconsistencies with it. First Obama said he has heard "questionable comments" while attending his sermons. Second he said that he could no more reject him as he could the black community. But this is tantamount to rejection. Wright had already stepped down. Obama didn't have to give that reply in the interview, and it's clearly a response against Hillary's "I would've left Wright's Church" comment to deflect her Kosovo lies.

I don't know if his staff suggested saying it or whatever, but if the news continues to report it the way it has been, Obama will have thrown Wright under the bus. It's political calculation. His crazed followers will cheer the move, just as his staff urged Obama to say this several weeks earlier. Personally, I was more impressed that he supported his pastor, who has presided over his marriage and children's baptisms, and used it not to distance himself away from the racial controvery, but rather to open minds about it.

    2. I thought the typical white person remark was stupid. If only for the reason that he parsed his speech. You give an intelligent and intricate speech only chop it down one day later, gift wrapped for right wing radio into three words?? WTF! It's a damn long speech already. People are less likely to hear/read it if they're offended. But they will listen to talking heads that do the thinking for them.

    3. Leaking the Wright with President Clinton photo and it's connotations. Immature bull****. For hardened politicos, this is SOP and inoffensive. He has to reign in his staff and remind them of the bigger picture.

    4. The unilateral bombing of sovereign nations rhetoric designed to boost his foreign policy credentials as "tough". This is the situation. Presidents have long done this in the past when there's a clear and vested American interest in doing so. But they do it on the down low. So there are two possibilities with him claiming this policy is different or new compared to the present President or Obama's rival candidates. He didn't know other presidents have done this before, or he does know of the precedents behind this, but he wants the world or the nation to know that he's "tough". It's just a bad move, again designed to make scared and frustrated Americans over the deteriorating world climate cheer for him.

One last thing, Obama has a keen political mind. He has shown legal dominance and has mastered its language in his planned speeches. Now you can use that for good, or like Bill chose to do, you can use it for evil. I don't know which for sure yet. I still support the man and the promise he brings to invigorating the American people. But much remains to be seen.
