Well, on an interview with Deke after the ceremony, Deke said he hadn't made up his mind on retirement ... that he'd do that after the season.

I'm sure this was Yao speaking positively, that Deke SHOULD be back next year, because we need him, and he's still playing very well.

... no news here. But, I enjoyed reading the article. Its obvious that Deke has Yao's respect, as he should.

    Misleading thread title.

Should say "Yao Ming's Opinion: Uncle Mutombo...."

yes. You can tell Yao likes Mutombo and respects him. In most case, if you know someone(not run into someone) and call him uncle, it also shows you are close to him. On the other hand, do not ever call anyone "son" if you are not really his father. It will likely end up a fist fight ;)

Well, I watched lots of rockets videos. When Yao spoke English, for example, when he mentioned Deke when talking with reports, he always says "Deke", never says "Uncle Moto" etc.

    Definitely that is the case.

If you guys had read most of the articles about Yao, you'll know:

    • Yao and Mutombo are very close friends and team mates
    • Big Yao always went out dining together with Uncle Mutombo on their road trips
    • Right after the doctors' analysis that he had this season-ending stress fractured ankle, it was Uncle Mutombo that Yao Ming called to confide in his agony and sadness
    • Right after his surgery and prior to his rehabilitation, it was Uncle Mutombo who wnet to visit Big Yao once every other day at his house to just chat with him
    • Big Yao had looked up to Uncle Mutombo as his model, and said he will learn more about and imitate Uncle Mutombo's good deeds in his humanitarian and charity works.
    • Big Yao had committed to travel to Africa, including Congo, with Uncle Mutombo this coming summer, i.e. after the Beijing Olympics for humanitarian/charity work.

Yes that's true. But it's also true that when he talked with Chinese media, he usually use the Chinese word "Uncle Mu" instead of "Deke" or "Mutombo".

So the conclusion: when Yao talks with Americans, he calls him "Deke"; when talks with Chinese, he calls him "Uncle Mu".

"Uncle" has nothing to do with relations in this case. It just shows respect.

Actually, Uncle Mutombo is not really how chinese fans call deke. We call him "Mu Da Shu". Mu is Mutombo, Da is oldest and shu is uncle. So, we actually call him Oldest Uncle Mu.

It started on some popular basketball forums. Fans wanted to show their respect to Deke. Then more and more people call deke in this way including reporters, TV announcers and Yao.

The funny thing is, Deke is called oldest uncle. And we called Juwan Howard "second oldest unclue Ho".

Check from the 00:46 mark and you will know how much Deke has been taking care of Yao.

lol Mutombo is the only person in the entire clutch forum and any other rockets forum that has never been bashed yet.

You just can't bash the guy, he is awesome. If his tree burnt down, it means he is immortal
