maybe 15 years ago. he's can't walk 10 feet passed the teleprompter without forgetting the words. i'm with Coma, Axl Rose ftw!
Gene Simmons? -- actually he would be the favorite front man of my youth. We all loved KISS Personally I like Brian Setzer
I agree with Plant, Jagger, Axl and Mercury. I'd add Steven Tyler to your list and take out Jack White.

Don't know who the best is, but I can tell you who the worst is. Never felt gayer at a concert then when I went to see Erasure back in high school. <object width="425" height="355"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/6nETIWoZTxo&hl=en"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/6nETIWoZTxo&hl=en" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="355"></embed></object>
I can't believe it took this long for someone to mention him. I'd be perfectly happy with this guy: Dave Mustaine ftw.
We ought to set up a 1-10 rating system like The History Channel decides 'The Best Tank' or whatever. I'd rate: Pipes - great front men don't have to have classically trained voices, sometimes uniqueness is more important, like say, Joe Cocker. The man can sing! but it's not anything like Steve Perry who can sing. Charisma - dance moves, sex appeal, crash and burn lifestyle, motivational inspirational, unique sense of fashion, no wimps. Song writing - front men need to be the songwriters, lyrics anyway (excludes Daltry?) . It's a tough gig. you need point of view, something to say, but it needs to be obtuse enough that fans have their own interpretation. Emotional Range - rockin, hurtin, pissed, happy, serious humorous (excludes David Lee?) Length of Service - not really decades required but we need to eliminate the one hit wonders, flash in the pans and careers ended before their zenith (Morrison would score low here, Janis too.) And finally Leadership - the front man needs to hold a band together, know when to reinvent it, draw sidemen and virtuosos to him, and allow the music to be greater than a vehicle for his talents. Rate away 1-10 for these factors on anyone you want. But the answer is Jagger. 10 10 10 10 10 10
